Need a whiskey recommendation

Friend of the GF’s is having his 50th birthday party tomorrow.

I don’t know him super well, but have hung out with him and we actually used to work together at the same company (but didn’t have much interaction).

I know he likes whiskey, and … tropical fish. Not touching the fish aspect.

So, I want to buy him a whiskey for the birthday party. Something not common, but also not so stupid rare that I won’t find it at my local buy-rite or other liquor stores.

Any suggestions?

I’m not a whiskey drinker, but a friend always asks for Woodford.

Appreciate it. I’m not a big whiskey drinker either, hence the ask.

Cant go wrong with Buffalo Trace

What kind of whiskey… bourbon, scotch, Tennessee, irish, rye?

How much are you looking to spend?

Booker’s, Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, Angel’s Envy, Elijah Craig, Larceny, Four Roses, Old Forester, etc.

Some more boutique stuff that is good but may not be able to be found here:
Hooten Young (made by Hoot from Black Hawk Down)
Old Fourth
New Riff

Blanton’s, Weller (Special reserve or 12), Pappy - pretty much unobtanium right now.

I dunno. That’s why I’m asking the whiskey experts.

$100 or under?

These are all bourbon whiskies. Maker’s Mark, Knob Creek 12 Year, and Buffalo Trace are all good sipp’n

The Chris Stapleton whiskey is quite good and not pricey at all. It’s made by Buffalo Trace.

4 Roses small batch.
It’s found everywhere and usually around $50.

For bourbon, Eagle Rare, or Angels Envy.
Irish whiskey, Jameson 18 year old.
Scotch in not that familiar with anymore.

Some great suggestions haven mentioned like Angel’s Envy and Woodford. I would stay with single malt instead of blended. Although, there are some good ones out there.
But my all time favorite is Glenmorangie Lasanta. It’s a single malt aged for two years in a bourbon cask then for an additional two year in a sherry cask.

I don’t drink anything that tastes like bandaids!

Some of those Scotches taste like the inside of my bbq pit…so smoky!

My mother was a scotch lover, one of her favorites tasted like composted leaves and peat moss. it cost close to $200 a bottle. There is no accounting for taste.

Thanks for the suggestions all, ended up getting 2 to hopefully ensure at least one unique one:

I just got back from (yet another) business trip to Dublin, and one of my colleagues got me this.

Anxious to try it, supposed to be fairly hard to get.
