I took the class today at WeShoot. It was a long one. 5 hours. I scored a 94 with a Glock 42. Tonight I tried to do the online application on the State Police page. . It stopped me when it couldn’t find my fingerprints with my SBI number. It was my understanding that if you had a firearms ID card you didn’t have to get printed again. Did you guys have to get prints again or am I doing something wrong?
Hi DqAlex -
I got my 2nd permit last month and they did not require fingerprints this time around. When I first applied 2 years ago they did require fingerprints through IndetoGo.
You might want to inquire with firearmsinvestunit@njsp.gov about your specific issue. Maybe they need to fix something in the system or else require you to get a new set. I think even for handgun permits they want prints every 5 years.
I believe you still need to get finger printed for your initial CCW
You definitely do not need to get fingerprinted again. That is one decent thing that was in the carry killer bill.
This is in NJSA 2C:58-4 para c
“The chief police officer, or the superintendent, as the case may be, shall determine whether the application is complete and, if so, shall cause the fingerprints of the applicant to be taken and compared with any and all records maintained by the municipality, the county in which it is located, the State Bureau of Identification and the Federal Bureau of Identification or, for an applicant who previously submitted fingerprints in order to apply for a firearms purchaser identification card or a permit to purchase a handgun in accordance with N.J.S.2C:58-3 or a permit to carry a handgun in accordance with this section, may solicit such other identification information as may be authorized by the superintendent for the conduct of a comparable criminal record check.”
There have been other people who have reported that the system couldn’t find their prints. It could be a light variation in the way you enter your name. e.g. “John Q Public” or “John Q. Public” or “John Public”, or maybe their database is just not as robust as it should be.
Contact your PD for help resolving it.
What if you were printed 35 years ago and you still have a state issued yellow FID card?
Yep… Exactly what I had… Still had to go to Identi.go
I think they want everyone to get identigo printed at least once. if i’m not mistaken all new fid prints, for some time now, have to be done through identigo. so, if you applied for an fid some years ago with ink printing at the police station, you will have to go to identigo and get printed again for a cwp. if you got your fid just a few years ago, and were printed at identigo, you shouold be gtg… i think.
Thanks guys. Tomorrow I’m going to stop by my local PD and get all the info for indentGO. I have an old yellow Firearms ID card. I haven’t bought anything in NJ for years. That must be the problem
Just another anecdote - when I applied for my first PTC (roughly November '22) I had to get digitally printed at IdentoGO even though I had recent history with P2P’s yearly and a FID change of address.
I did not have to get re-printed when I renewed my PTC around Dec last year.
I have the old yellow FID card and did NOT get fingerprinted again for my CCW.
I have been fingerprinted at identigo for work in the past. I doubt that the firearms people looked into some identigo database and found i was in there. If such database even exists. Maybe it is at each towns discretion.
Then they already had your prints on file. Lke I said, they want everyone printed at IdentiGO at least once.
They dont keep prints “on file”, and they only allow one code per prints. They send the print to the “code” you gave them and they officially wash their handa of the process.
I got printed for work, and 2 weeks later had to get printed again for my FPID, this was YEARS ago.
I moved, and applied for a change address on my FPID and they didnt request it again, but then when i went for my carry permit I had to do get printed again.
This.
I got printed for a job at a school, then when I moved to another city I had to get re-printed at Identogo for my FID - they couldn’t use the printing from a previous code from the school.
NJSP does not throw away fingerprints. When someone has a BG check done for a job or school thing (like my wife did for volunteer work at a school) they only use the prints for the BG check, and then (possibly legally required) discard the prints.
IdentiGO wants to print people as often as they can to make money. NJSP, only needs to print you once, and the prints are kept on file. For people (like me) who were printed in the yellow paper card days, NJSP does not have an identiGO digital print.
So, if I lost my FID, moved, applied for a pistol permit, or cwp, they would send me to IdentiGO to be reprinted digitally, and those prints would be kept forever. NJSP will reuse the digital prints forever.
Identigo also do the background check. The type of check is not the same for all purposes which is why they make you get printed separately for school, cub scouts, firearms, health profession, CDL, etc.
Plus Corzine gets a cut every time Identigo gets paid.
I just got off the phone with my local PD. They were very helpful. They looked up my SBI number and suggested that I try again without using the zero first. It worked. They found my prints.
That’s the part I hate the most
I did not get fingerprinted for my NJ CCW. In fact, I was fingerprinted back in the 1980’s for my original firearms card and never printed since.
That makes the conditions for getting identiGO printed even more arbitrary. There is no relable pattern for requirement to get identigo printed vs old ink prints vs having been printed at identigo previously and having to be printed again. makes no sense.
Things appear to be moving along. I kept getting e-mails when each of my references sent back their replies. Now its just up to my local PD I guess
