Hey folks! Been dragging feet on getting a carry permit pending decisions as far as the carry killer law goes. I Just read the FAQ above as far as sensitive places go and all of that and am genuinely curious to hear from people on here as to whether it’s even worthwhile? My uncle got his in NY so i’ve been considering getting mine here in NJ again, but after reading that list, where can you even carry? The few places not prohibited have signs prohibiting carrying, and while i realize that you have to get caught for that to be enforced, the idea that i can’t carry when i take my kids fishing or hiking or anything at the park or other is a bit silly. I Can already carry at my farm and around my property, my Rabbi carries at our synagogue (His house) and has given everyone in the congregation that has a firearm the same permission (probably the most heavily armed congregation since 10/7 threats) and other than carrying in the car (Which is only legal currently thanks to a temporary injunction, from what i recall), where else is it actually useful?
Also, lets say i’m carrying and decide to take my kids to the park, need to pick a kid up from school if the nurse calls, etc. can i lock the firearm in a safe in my glove box and go, or am i required to go home, lock it up, and then do what i need to do?
Looking for some folks that actually carry to chime in here. Is it a waste of time & money?
“It’s even worthwhile”
Might want to read this earlier discussion:
“Temporary injunction”
That has been in effect for over a year and a half.
That could change any day when the 3rd circuit issues a ruling, but it’s been a pretty long “temporary” period.
Thanks, i’ll read it now.
Yeah, thats sort of been my thought. We all knew the second Concealed carry came into play that it’d be an absolute shit show, so i- like many others- went with the “wait and see” logic.
Of course it’s been quite a while now and we’re still waiting and i’m just debating if to suck it up and get mine and see what happens in the future or just continue waiting it out.
If all of these rules hold up in court, the permit is nothing but a paperweight for 99% of us.
Hell, as it is it it is basically a paperweight for your average person in their day to day life; can’t carry in any store, doctors office, public property, private without permission, etc. etc. etc.
So you can essentially carry in your car (Which i believe is also being disputed) and on YOUR private property.. And i carry on my own private property regardless, so…
Also worth noting that renewing every 2 years with the now-higher fees and costs of the class/qual/whatever you want to call it is pretty damn prohibitive for your average person.
Let’s compare that in NJ to where I am right now, in Florida… you know.. a FREE state with Constitutional Carry… yeah… no temporary injunctions to worry about here!
You can carry in any store unless they serve alchohol for on premise consumption. All property open to the public is also good unless they have a sign prohibiting carry, but why would you give some putz your money?
If I’m going in to a location that’s prohibited by law I unload and lock in my safe and reload and holster when I leave.
I’ve been keeping an eye out and i’m pretty sure most stores in my area (Elk Township/Glassboro) have ‘no firearms’ signs. I’ve seen them everywhere.
That said, Gloucester county is a blue county, despite my being in a rural area where i can shoot on my own land (at least for now, that’s TBD when all of these new construction communities they have planned go up D: ).
People call the cops occasionally but they just come hang out. Haha
To be clear, most of the stores i frequent will be chain stores; Walmart, Shoprite, etc., which generally will have no firearms signs on them.
The only one i could think of that might not is Tractor Supply when i’m picking up animal feed.
I’ll definitely keep an eye out next time my girlfriend drags my sorry ass out shopping and see what stores have signs. Need to go pick some clothes up for my kids soon, i’ll check back in after.
Most, if not all Shoprite stores are owned and run as a franchise rather then a single national company. The one I use in Clinton has no sign about firearms at all so by default all the publicly accessible areas are OK to carry in.
Walmart has a sign saying openly carried firearms are not allowed. Therefore, your concealed handgun is fine. Every Walmart in the US has the same sign.
No shit. I’ll have to check my store the next time i’m out there. I Definitely recall some sort of firearms sign at walmart but you might be right, i don’t remember the details.
Pretty sure about my shoprite having a no firearms sign though.
I’ll have to log where i see the signs on my day to day. My brain is fuzzy, i always look but never really made note of where specifically i’ve seen them. If most of the places i frequent don’t have signs i very well might just move forward with applying.
Do we have any idea as to when the cases might be heard RE the “temporary” stays?
This is why I don’t understand why people are cheering that we are “allowed” to CCW in NJ. Every time we arrive at a location, it’s jump though the memory banks, is this a sensitive location or not, then jump through all the hoops to disarm, lock up, and reverse the process when coming out.
I find that to be quite a burden just to have a partial “right”. But some people accept that level of having a leash on by this state…
I decided to get mine because of work. That and the paperwork is now all done online. I’ve had Florida since 2018. I never thought I would see a NJ carry permit. When we move to Florida full time I’m going to frame my NJ Permit and put it on my wall.
