Just wondering, for those of you that went through the process of getting a NJ CCW permit, has it been worth it? Are you getting the “value” out of it, for all you went through to get approved?
I haven’t applied for it, as I felt all the hoops that needed to be jumped through, wouldn’t make it beneficial, based on all the restricted places that you can’t carry. Plus, the issue of having to unholster to go into many different places really seemed overbearing.
I originally applied before they raised the fees but regardless the ‘value’ is still the same in my opinion having the choice where I did not have that prior. I do not carry every day or every time I leave the house but all in all I’m happy to now have the option.
I’m getting ready to renew and already took the use of force class and qual again. Just holding off closer to the expire date to get the most ‘value’ out of the original permit since the clock starts over as soon as the new one is issued. I believe the fees and such are still being challenged.
I purchase a fishing license and trout stamp yearly and went only a handful of times this year and didn’t keep anything. I’ve been buying a hunting license for a few years but have not hunted yet. Some of the fees paid go to worthy conservation, maintenance and stocking causes so I don’t mind the cost so much. I sort of look at the carry permit the same way. If everyone just waited the politicians would say ‘hey look no one wants or needs a carry permit.’
I’d hope more people will get it and then complain to their politicians about the exorbitant fees.
Even if I never ‘need’ it (and I hope I never do), I enjoy metaphorically sticking it to Murphy, Platkin, Danielsen, Scutari, Grewal, Menendez, Weinberg, Florio and all the other major past NJ “anti” legislators every time I step off my property while carrying.
How are you guys handling the “sensitive places” issue? Do you find it overly restrictive? I haven’t been paying much attention to how that’s working out. I believe there was a court ruling last year that opened some areas up.
I use a lockbox that sits under the drivers seat with a stout security cable looped around the drivers seat frame rail.
If I happen to arrive at a “sensitive place” while carrying I get in the back seat, pull out the box from under the drivers seat, pull the handgun out of the holster, unload it and lock it in the box.
For the obvious - gov building, school, medical facility ok no problem I’ll leave it home taking the kid to school or doctor appointment, polling place etc. The rest of it I was initially concerned but found even I forget I’m carrying (it becomes part of you) and more often than not I am checking the door on my way out to see if they have some kind of sign as I forget to look on my way in. No one has said a word to me about it if they noticed. I’m not trying to push any boundaries I’m just going about my normal day to day.
I try avoiding places that serve alcohol and instead choose BYO places and my wife can drink all she likes, I’ll drive and carry. I also avoid going to malls and bowling alleys.
Most of the time I am planning my day and if there is a concern I’ll just leave it home and not risk it. I carry chambered so I’m not fond of unloading/reloading in the car or parking lot though I have had to do that a few times. No holes in the floorboard yet.
I found it worth it. Carried for a short time in the beginning but was very self conscious so didn’t carry for awhile or just carried sometimes. Now I wear it most of the time, it’s become normal. Grab my keys, wallet, water bottle, holster. All standard equipment now.
I am on second term already, first two years was the same pistol and borring. Now they allow any and it better. Value or not is something you need to deside. I would carry as much as I can, sensative placese are in any states. I would better be with my pistol vs without.
Yes it is way overpriced. Yes being forced to take a test that you have to pay for in addition to the exorbitant price of the permit is unconstitutional.
Yes it is worth it.
29 states are now constitutional carry, so it’s far from the same in any state. All states will have sensitive places excluded, but what is excluded can vary greatly from state to state. NJ seems to exclude more places than most states.
I travel around the country a lot in my RV, and have some out of state permits from a few other states. So, I’m always checking reciprocity with them for the different states I’m in. Plus, with those 29 states having constitutional carry, that opens up a lot of territory.
What I noticed, I get more reciprocity with my out of state permits versus if I got a NJ permit. So, thinking I’d get more by getting the NJ permit, doesn’t work out. Plus, I try to avoid the anti 2A states as much as possible in my travels.
For me it’s well worth it. I carry whenever I can. If I’m going out to a place that serves alcohol I leave it home. In regards to sensitive places I lock it up before I go in, and back on when I come out
The sensitive places are a pain. But overall it’s worth it. Just get a lock box with a cable to put under the seat so you can put it in there if you gotta go into anywhere that’s restricted.
I have kids so im at schools, playgrounds, libraries, etc all-the-frickin time and…i always spontaneously go to restaurants that serve alcohol 5x a week.
Unholstering and locking my gun in a lockbox in my car 3x a day, with my family and others possibly seeing that…Is it worth it?
Yes, only to help the 2A cause.
Not to carry to think ill be able stop an active shooter at a school event, library or even an imminent lethal threat at an Applebees (because my gun is locked in my car).
