Some of you might remember my other thread where I was trying to save my old Lab, Sniper, from cancer. Unfortunately, after exhausting all medical options, I lost him at the end of January. Such a heartbreaking loss!
So, I wasn’t expecting to make this quick of a decision on a new dog, but the opportunity presented itself, so I went for it. Fox Red Lab puppies are pretty rare, and there weren’t many around, so I pulled the trigger. I lost Sniper on January 21st, and this pup was born the same week, January 24th, so maybe it was meant to be…
Here is Samson hanging out with some of Sniper’s past buddies.
That’s why it was so heartbreaking to lose my other dude, Sniper, to cancer at 7. We finally got to a really good (and calm), place, and then I lost him, instead of having a few great more years.
Now, I’m back to square one, with the new T-Rex… LOL…
So, two more months down the road, and the jury is still out on if this dude is in his final home… I think I might have got duped… I think I really have Satan and Velociraptor hidden in a puppy costume… man, what a challenge this dude is.
Some new pictures, we actually made the mistake in taking this 4 month old creature on a 5 week RV trip to Yellowstone… what an “experience”…
Sorry for your loss as a boxer owner, I’ve unfortunately lost 3 to cancer and Harley is still rolling strong the PIA LOL.
This pups a good look pupper!!! Congrats. HOw you doing Samson welcome!
LOL… he’s got about another month, to see if his “attitude” changes, before I decide he need s different home to live in. This dude is our 4th Lab puppy, but boy, so different than the other three. I actually bought a DNA test kit, to see if maybe he’s got part Rottweiler or Pit Bull in him, instead of pure breed Lab, which might explain the aggression…
I should have invested in Band-aids… I’d be rich… LOL..
I think that part is awesome. These dogs need to earn their keep, guarding the homestead.
That’s how Sniper was, I trained him to be a Level One personal defense dog, which for a Lab, was never expected. If you were someone he didn’t know and came to the storm door, you’d think he was coming through the glass to rip out your throat. If I had him outside on his long lead, he would drive delivery guys all the way back to the road.
However, if I happened to pop the front door open, he’d rush out and give the driver kisses to death, and blow his cover. If we were out walking on his leash, I could put him into defensive mode, where someone coming by would really worry that he was going to rip them to schreads.
Depending on how things go with this new dude, Samson, I’m hoping I can channel his agressiveness into Level Two, when he gets a little older. That’s his primary job here.
Being that you don’t know his past history, how do you know something won’t trigger him, and he turns on you guys?
I’m not worried about him. He’s like Baby Huey with us.
All he wants is to sit in my lap and lick my face.
We were playing tug of war with his rope the other day. He was growling and snarling at me, like he was a vicious attack dog,
I snarled back at him, and he started crying and whining. His eyes got all big and sad, like I was mad at him.
Had to reassure him it was just all playtime.
He climbed up on my lap and spent the next 30 mins giving me kisses. I was soaked in dog slobber!
He ain’t hurting us, but God help the bastard that tries to hurt the wife or I.
I should add that we are working with a Bully Rescue organization, called ‘LoveaBully’(I think that’s the name).
They have been excellent, providing us with no cost training from a professional dog trainer.
They are absolutely outstanding to work with. The trainer comes out twice a month and has developed training programs for him..training us to train him.
He’s smart, a quick learner, and loves to please us.
Update, I ran two different DNA tests, both highly rated and Samson came back 100% Labrador Retriever on both. So, I got what I paid for.
But unfortunately, I think it’s time to find him a new home, where he can have some other dogs to play with and a larger yard to run. He’s a American Lab or Field Lab, not the more popular English Lab, and as such, has a higher activity level. He’s definitely not a couch potato. He’s not interested in just laying around the house. Being that he’s really smart and learns quickly, he could make a great hunting dog.
So, looking to see if anyone here is interested in having him join their home. I think he would do well in a home with some other dogs to play with and some yard to run in. I just don’t have the energy, being retired, to run him all day.
If you’re interested, let me know. He’ll be 7 months old on the 24th. Recent pics:
