I was in discussion with other members on the old forum about applying for VA compensation for service connected injuries and would like to thank them. I ETS’s in 1987 and nobody ever told us about these benefits, I found out here. so for the last 2 years I have been getting as many of my medical records as possible and was able to get a 10% disability rating for ears, 11B was an MOS that easily qualified. I’m now in the process of applying for hypertension (high blood pressure) as that service period was when I was first diagnosed, I feel due to deployments and alerts all the time. I went through the VSO service provided by Morris County.
I don’t know if NJ offers these benefits to veterans, but it’s worth checking to see if you get a break on your property taxes.
Between homesteading, and the veterans tax benefit, I cut my property taxes in half.
I think as long as you have a 100% rating you don’t pay property taxes in NJ, other then that you would have had to served in certain narrow time frames during various conflicts to get a tiny break on your taxes.
We have a graduated system in Texas, with brackets for discounts on property taxes.
100% pays nothing.
Other rating levels have an associated discount.
Does NJ have a homestead exemption?
Don’t forget free hunting and fishing licenses, along with permits and stamps! Pretty good deal for disabled vets in NJ.
I like to pick mine up at Dicks every year. It takes them time, effort, and the cost of printing everything up, then I walk out without EVER buying anything from them.
Great, thanks for the info. I buy the hunting license each year for the range use. My docments will be in the mail soon. Im learning all of this from sites like this.
The application is asking for a CID#
I dont see any such number on any of my VA documentation. Do you know what number there looking for.
That’s a “Conservation ID” # that they give you for life and enters you into their database. It would have been assigned to you when you first did a hunter safety or whatever course, or first hunting/fishing license, etc.
Look on your last license or permit and you should see it - a 9-number ID. Mine is just S followed by my full social security number, but they probably quit using that.
Thanks. I found it on my current license. Never saw that before.
VA disability is a rough road but a valuable one if you pursue it.
I came off first active duty tour in 1970. I was still under treatment for an agent orange issue (they didn’t know it was because of Agent Orange at the time. They gave me 10%.
Fast forward to about 2007. I saw the VSO in ocean county. He asked me how much i was getting. I told him 10%. He said ill get you 100%. He waa a fellow Vietnam Vet.
Dont back down. The VA will always deny your claim on the first go around. Get a hearing. Your VSO should go along with this.
I wound up with 100% about 5 years ago.
Process was long but worth it. They denied 3 of the 4 even with my nexus letter but now i have to build on that one that was approved.
Have to get professional assistance with next one.
Where do you live
not sure how to PM you
Hey Revenger - You can not PM until you reach Trust Level 2. GRIZ is Trust Level 2 so he can PM you and you can reply.

The county VSO office should be able to provide all the assistance you need. If got denied automatically filed an appeal. I had several hearings in Newark. All turned out good for me.

Maybe an old post but I have been after being prompted by my friends from jiu jitsu have encouraged me to do so. When I got out of the Navy in 94 I went to the VA/VSO and was talking about my issues with my back, neck, migraines etc and was scared away from filing with threats.
2 years ago after talking to my teammates, and I also work with an NPO we help combat disabled vets from GWOT primarily. And again they were encouraging me… things that I have learned as I am filing for more:
- has to have proof in your medical records
- file based off of this evidence, BUT see a Dr. who will provide a Nexus letter stating “it is as likely as not related to name “service connected” or connected too incident while in service”.
- a buddy letter is always helpful I had my Team member from service, my father (for my TBI), and currently wife, Team member and current friend write letters.
- Use your VSO it’s free, they’re their for you… my VSO in Burlington county Jason has been amazing. I have a friend who went through a “service” it was 4k but it worked for him. Be warey of the scumbags out there who write fake non medical Nexus letters, I saw a few Vets have their % go from 100% to 0# because of this.
Take the time and do it right, if you get turned down the 1st time go deeper, I was turned down for my back and neck 1s time through I went to an orthopedic who did MRI’s etc, wrote me the letter and when I had my CNP exam they were like oh wow yeah. 2+ months letter I got my percentage with primary and 2ndary and back pay from when I originally submitted my claim.
We put our A$$ on the line, we signed the dotted line and did our best for our Country.. so if it’s legitamate (too many guys fakingit) do it!
I received neck/back/tbi/migraines/tinnitus& hearing loss.
Good luck man I have some knowledge on this whole thing.. but still learning.
I got out of army in 1990
Didn’t know anything about disabilities, filed 3 years ago for hearing, got 10% . Missed out on 30 years of disability.
Nobody ever told us, found out through someone on the old njgunforum. Every vet should go to their VSO.
Absolutely like I said I tried in 94 when I got out and they threatened me. Today I’m still f’d up still dealing with the same things I did 30+ years ago but worse now over time but now I have my VA Disability. I fell 10’on to concrete in Guam post dessert storm got TKFO’d hit my neck and back hard. Plus another in Diego Garcia had 2 safes fall on my neck I’d have been dead if the tru k I drove didn’t have a steel chair frame.
