Samsung messages vs Google messages

Samsung messages is discontinuing their app on July 6th and transferring to Google messenger. Is there any cons using Google?

interested in this too. been using samsung…..

I’ll be watching this, not a fan of google messages, and especially not a fan of being forced to use google messaging.

Switch to iPhone. Google sucks.

Switch to Signal. It works with all apps, but when it is Signal user to Signal user, it encrypts your text and phone calls. If you do install it, all of your contacts who use signal will show up in your signal app. It is free for personal use, and you’d be surprised which of your friends is using the app

I recently upgraded to the S26 Ultra from the S24 Ultra. I used samsung messenger on the S24 and realized the S26 does not have it installed any, so i’m stuck with google messenger. It is a PITA, it has a bad habit of creating new threads for existing group messages. So you end up with multiple threads for the same group and I haven’t found a way to reliably fix it.

What about WhatsApp?

I think their pretty similar. Signal might have a bit more privacy from what I’ve read.

A lot more privacy. Enough that only three letter agencies can get at encrypted data, and not without some effort.

EDIT: But that encryption is only signal to signal user. To anyone else it is simple sms like any ordinary app.

The tricky part is getting everyone on your contact list to download the signal app. Probably just add family and close friends.

Unrelated side note for Android users

If you feel your phone is slow, you should turn on developer options and change your 3 animation settings from 1 to .5 your phone will instantly be '“faster” this can help you get a few extra years out of the phone if your a person who doesn’t upgrade phones regularly. I also recommend looking into the pixel devices as they are pure android and relatively cheap. As a android fan, iPhone has the best messaging + FaceTime, however now iPhone supports RCS which has made things better.

Back to the actual topic

Group chat wise Google messages is sometimes buggy, but I have groupchats on WhatsApp, Google messages, and signal. RCS chats are encrypted but if you really want privacy then signal is the best route but as another person mentioned it’s only private if your other contacts use signal. Whatsapp uses the signal protocol but I would consider that more of security and not privacy because meta takes all your data and uses it.

I personally find it easier to have group chats in signal/Whatsapp and day to day conversation in Google messages. It’s also easier to get your other contacts to use another app in the world of why do I have to install another app.

If your super concerned about government or a 3rd party knowing what your texting about…use a carrier pigeon.

So be careful - there are malware groups out there sending texts about a fake “Messenger” app that’s malware/ad laden. My cousin got suckered by it - he got the Verizon store to remove it but eventually got a new phone just in case. While he was there someone else came in with the same issue.

I don’t know if this Goggle Messages feature is available in other messaging systems but I like the fact that I can run Google Messages in a browser on my computer.

I work on my desktop or laptop most of the day and I type much faster and more accurately (I have big sausage fingers) on a computer keyboard then I do on my phone’s touch screen. I can also read the messages with less eye strain.

Whatsapp and Signal also have desktop versions.
