S&W M&P 2.0 failure to feed or seat round properly

Problem: when I fire the gun, a few times I’ll get a malfunction as feeding. The slide will lock up and live round gets stuck. I drop the mag grab the slide with my left hand and and whack the grip forward and the round falls out. Slide releases. My rso mentioned he thought it was an extractor problem? Anyone have any thoughts?

ammunition used Blazer 115g 5200
Mods to gun - apex trigger

is it ejecting spent bras and getting hung up chambering next round?

Also, what type of ammo, eg, hollow point, fmj, wad cutters etc

Sounds like a failure to feed issue to probably not the extractor. I’m gonna guess FMJ if it’s 115 blazer. Is the gun new? Mags factory? Did you install the Apex or a gunsmith or friend?

Is there a photo of the issue?

This would be helpful. Even if you can show us what the extractor is looking like.
How new is this (approx. round count?) Have you tried alternate ammo?

Ok. The gun has about 4000 rounds through it 3000 with apex trigger. Trigger was put in at we shoot a couple years ago. About 3000 of the rounds were blazer fmj 115gr. I never had an issue with blazer before. I don’t have a picture of it locked. The reason I feel it may be the extractor is when I got it unlocked and the round fell. As I examined it , the was notch in the brass and scape down the case. When I go next week I’ll take a picture. I think I’m going to take the extractor out and clean it up.

That’s a good start but the extractor may be a secondary issue. If it is ejecting the fired case and getting hung up on chambering the next round, that could have messed up the extractor.

I suggest inspecting the feed ramp too.

I want to leave out what your RSO said and first focus on the ‘lock up’

Are you saying that the round did not fully go into battery and then once you dropped the mag you had to use more than normal force to get the action open? Once this unlocks the live round drops out? This would indicate the extractor is functioning normal but you could actually have an ammo issue or an obstruction (possible burr in the chamber.)

  • Remove the barrel and test if a round drops in fully and cleanly. If it stops before fully seating that might be the problem. Try with various ammo if possible. If this passes more on to the extractor.

I’ve ran into a problem with some Fiocchi one time that was slightly out of spec and would jam up one of my guns. Prior to that I’m sure I have run Fiocchi through that gun before and was fine but haven’t ordered any since I had that issue. I have to figure batches that are at the end of the tooling life could causes some issues regardless of the manufacturer.

At that round count, you’re probably due for some parts replacement.
Springs, ejector, etc, those parts wear and have a finite life.

It’s probably a good time to go through the gun and give it a good PM, and I imagine you’ll solve the ftf issue,

Maybe. I think I have a bit more on mine and it’s still functioning just fine. Guess it depends what you’re feeding it. My chamber has slight play when I drop in a round. I may be due for a new barrel.

On the gun I was having a problem with the Fiocchi would not fully drop in when several others would.

That’s an excellent point. The whatever it’s called spring that pushes the slide forward may have weakened and not ramming the next cartridge into battery reliably.

Also, aren’t mags sometimes the issue, something about the lips getting deformed.

On a Glock, it’s called a RSA (recoil spring assembly).

It is the same batch of blazer from before or new? Maybe, off chance but maybe, a light lot. How about the mags? New old ?

It started happening in the last box of 1000 round cases and continued in a new case unfortunately I bought the 2000 rounds at one time. I just received a case with different numbers but as some of you have spoken the obvious… I do have some rounds through the gun and mags ( oh mags are all s&w some have been pinned cause I’m in nj and some are 10round from factory.

Ramp and barrel seem fine. Rifling is consistent.

Dropping a live round seats all the way in and falls out on its own?

No obstruction in and out clean

:+1: Ruled one thing out. Could also test the extractor holds a round in place:

Then you are down to recoil assembly and check rails/slide operate smoothly.

Edit: Also try to keep track if it’s with specific mags.
