Hi, got my NJ CCW permit renewed second time since it was allowed to us un NJ, but possibly i did this last time.
Why? Two reasons, first is cost and second is 4 references. It cost me around $400 in total which is crazy, 4 references is nuts, they don’t trust us and getting 4 people in one application is not easy process. I will give up in 2 years and i know many friends who will too. I love my my gun club and guns but no way i will support this state with my money anymore. Thanks!
True, 4 ppl every time who support 2A rights is somewhat hard to have in your close circle in NJ, last time for my pistol purchase permit application one of my so called friend messed up because his thoughts about gun violence.
Specifically sensitive places is another BS for CCW.
Which is why I haven’t wasted my time getting it. Having the state give me permission to carry from my porch to my mailbox, and back, ain’t worth it, to jump through all the hoops they throw at us.
I think many states are restricting post offices, but things with food places with the alcoholes is not, also “no metter what you are in jail” rule doesnt impress my CCW rights as well. Policy that no CCW in Costco is for every store in US, so not just NJ. Car carry is nuts too, so as many other things. Paying $400 every two years for all this liberal mess is funny.
I cancelled my Costco membership because of their dumb policy. BJ’s gets my money now. The ban on parks just meant that I walk my dog on public sidewalks instead. Very seldom do I need to take off my gun in my day-to-day life.
There is no restriction on car carry. That BS was enjoined by the District Court.
Finding 4 people is easy if you shoot with any kind of regularity. Join a club or get out to matches. You will meet people who will happily be your reference.
You will probably also meet someone who is an instructor who will run you through the qual for cheap or nothing at all. My buddies get the F&F discount where they only pay the fee required by the range where I run the quals.
I dont want to cancel, i just CCW. Problem with car that it has to be on you or in trunk unloaded, not near with you even in holster. That is annoying if you are driving a lot. 4 people will be 6 people in two years. Why 4? Who said that 4 is enough? Getting them ready to respond same time as police is asking - not simple, people are on vacation, sick, busy, not home, not opening emails, emails are in spam… Fees are hefty for the 2 years only, $400 out of pocket is a lot for many people.
When we first got a realistic chance of getting our permits following Bruen, the old paper based system was still in place. It only required 3 references, but they had to physically sign your application form. That was a real PITA.
It was especially annoying for me as I had obtained signatures from 3 people by going to visit them and the day before I was going to hand the form in to NJSP, they changed the form and I had to do it again.
With just about everybody carrying a smart phone today, electronic references are super easy. I just renewed my carry permit too, and it took 58 minutes from the moment I submitted my application to the last reference completing their part.
Seriously, start hanging out with gun people doing gun things, and the references problem you complain about will disappear. You will probably be able to make friends with an instructor who will be able to do your qual for a discounted rate, or for free as well.
For the $200 permit fee, look into the campaign for getting towns to refund their portion of the fee. It has had great success and drops the fee down to just the $50 to the state for most towns that passed it. You can campaign for your town to do the same.
Alternatively, you could give up and let bastards in Trenton win, yet again.
ETA: There are also the additional benefits to having a carry permit other than carrying a defensive handgun. The directly-to-or-from BS no longer applies to you. You can get your PA carry permit. VA, NC, MI & MN also recognize the NJ permit in addition to the Constitutional carry states.
Post Offices is a Federal thing, not a state thing.
That is exactly the reaction that the state was hoping you would have
If you haven’t noticed, they’ve been winning, all along. Case in point, have we got back our 15 round mags yet? (we’re on year 8). How about 30 round??
Nothing for nothing, I just checked, and a Florida NR gets you more bang for the buck, with zero BS.
NJ - 26 Honored, 30 Not Honored
Florida NR: 32 Honored, 24 Not Honored
I don’t understand this perspective.
Sure, there are a lot of ways they screw us from Trenton (and they keep coming up with new and imaginative ways all the time), but denying that we have made progress is baffling.
Why try to own guns in NJ at all? NJSA 2C:39-5 makes all firearms illegal as a first step. It then carves out exceptions to the blanket ban where you have the option to jump through various hoops to be allowed to exercise your rights.
The carry permit hoops and fees are onerous, but there is an open pathway to getting one now.
Most of the work to get the magazine and “assault rifle” bans overturned has been done. Once SCOTUS publishes Woolford, the 3rd Circuit is likely to issue their en banc decisions which I anticipate will be favorable to us.
To say Trenton won when they were forced to issue carry permits is bizarre to me.

Yeah, sure, they’ve been winning all along. That’s why I can carry in NJ currently.
Call me too hopeful, but we could see an overturn of the NJ mag restriction via a 3rd circuit decision any day now. Yes, it’s been ~8 years, because the case went up to SCOTUS and came back down - we discussed that before - not sure how it could have happened any faster with the conditions/courts we have. You want faster, you gotta move to another “box category”.
Except you don’t get NJ with Florida.
8 years and tons of work an money to block all my mags from 15 to 10, 8 years!!! i am gradually leaving my carbines alone, it is pain to shot 10 rounds with AR15, besides it needs tons of more of them. Pistols i am soso on 10.
I guess “making progress” is subjective. I got back into the sport, around 2011, after being dormant. I noticed how much “progress” we made, when I had to do a change of address on my FID, and had to jump through ALL the hoops again, like it was new, just for an address change… Yeah, progress.
Then, as I look back the past 15 years, I don’t see progress, but slipping backwards. Examples: 10 round mags, evil features on ARs, the whole P2P process, Red Flag laws, etc…
But, but , but, you’ll say… we got CCW, so all is great and “progress”. Except, add in that whole process and costs, the sensative places, the unholstering and locking in the car, etc…
But some here think that’s a WIN.. even though you can defend yourself in maybe 20% of the state legally…
To me, that’s like ordering a pizza, and only getting two slices of the 8, and thinking, well, at least I got a slice… ![]()
I, for one, don’t think getting 2 slices is any type of a win.
As it was written in the statute for years before you got back into the sport. You not having been exposed to the law saying that a change of address follows the same process as the initial application does not make it a recessive step. It just means you were not aware of how bad it was to start with.
Yes, the politicians have been busy screwing us. Our side has been busy fighting it. Surely, you don’t believe that if nobody had fought the proposals that they would have held back? There have been a ton of bills that either never got to the floor, got withdrawn, or were made much less bad by campaigning against them. Do you remember doing HQC1 (Modified) for your carry permit qualification? CCARE is a cake walk by comparison. Should there be a qual at all? No, or course not, but fighting them has been seeing successes.
Do you think having no chance at all of getting a carry permit is better than an onerous path that does eventually work? 20% of the State? Lol. I guess you don’t get out to the same places I do.
Compared to pizza being completely banned? In your analogy, it would be ordering pizza and getting none vs 2 of the 8 slices.
i agree, for every step forward in 2a we are making two backwards. for last 10 years we got other firearms and ability to walk with dog around complex with the gun ccw. that is all positive. just look what libs did in US with glock while trump!!! it could be converted to auto pistol!!! wtf!!! Yes NJ is not as bad as NY or CA but we are next after.
Some perspective:
When you look at the multi-decade arc of this issue, you guys are getting your asses absolutely handed to you. I know it can get frustrating for the pro-Second Amendment side, what with the snail’s pace of the litigation system and a handful of states being totally captured by you, but let’s review:
In 1959, 60% of Americans supported a ban on handguns. Today, only 20% support such a ban, as even a majority of Democrats oppose it. Your endorsed Presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, even had to pretend to be in favor of the right to own a handgun in the last election.
In the 1980s, less than ten states were shall-issue, most states did not issue at all (except to the rich and powerful), and only Vermont was constitutional carry. Today, thanks to both state-by-state gains and the Bruen ruling, an outright majority of states are constitutional carry, with the balance being shall-issue. You are left pathetically trying to undermine carry through ridiculous “sensitive places” laws, high fees, and long wait times in the small handful of states you control, but we will beat you there too.
“Assault weapon” bans are eroding in public support, with Gallup finding just a narrow 52% majority in support, down from 61% in 2019. As more and more people learn that “assault weapon” means common semiautomatic rifles, they are less likely to support these bans. Some polls even show support for such bans being weakest among young voters - the very group you insist is the strongest for gun control. Hopefully, SCOTUS decides this issue once and for all and hands you another big loss.
Suppressors are now legal in over 40 states, with the holdouts again being the few states your political allies fully control. But like with shall issue, we will eventually break through there too.
Nonviolent felon disarmament is not long for this world, with the Third Circuit creating a circuit split that the Supreme Court cannot ignore.
Those are just some examples. Progress is indeed a slow march, and I’m sure the hardcore blue states will still pass whatever you want, but the overton window is inching towards us more and more. The apex of gun control in the United States has passed, and the lie of the Second Amendment being a “collective” or “militia” right is defeated.
100% correct, that is why I am a big advocate for answering NO on all the questions on the NJ application. people get hung up on the question 26, if you have never been committed by a judge then the answer is NO NO NO. as many people recently found out about NJ lowering the bar for disqualifiers such as now you just have to have been seeking help voluntarily in a psych place you now need a 2-3 thousand letter and an expungment at who knows how much that is so you can own a gun in NJ. soon metformin, wegovy, and even allergy medicine will disqualify you, mark my words. the 2a community is being run over by the states that hate personal freedoms, and if you have been paying attention they are all collaborating on their tactics going from blue state to blue state. even if the SC rules in our favor and what I mean “In our favor” is that it is 100% in the 2A favor, if they leave any ambiguity in their decision then it will only leave a pinhole for the anti’s to exploit it and we will be back at step 1. the SC MUST tell the states what a sensitive place is, can’t leave it up to states to define them. Thomas told them in the Bruin decision but it wasn’t clear enough. they must rule that no limit can be placed on ammo capacity or on any protected arm for that matter.
