These reels have been in the shed for the past 20 years or so. Mounted the lightweight Abu Garcia on a responsive 5’6" poll for snapper fishing the other day and yikes was it gummed up. So now I’m gonna tear it, and the others down and do a deep cleaning.
I believe I can use my US cleaner with “aluminum approved” Simple Green Pro HD (the purple stuff) in case there are aluminum parts. The only other cleaner on hand is CLP, and that might melt some parts. Is there such a thing as CLP for reels?
I just took apart and cleaned a, Penn 85 Sea boy. I just wiped all parts down and relubed.
Clean with naphtha, grease with yamaha marine lube
To be completely honest, toss those rear drag reels all together, not even worth the effort to clean.
I’m a BIG fan of Shimano reels, and have a bunch. I have many that are like 35+ years old, never had to touch them, or do any maintainance. Both salt and fresh water. Still working like new.
That isn’t going to happen. I have caught plenty of fish with them, and will catch many more. I guess the fish and I are too stupid to know the reels are garbage.
I just finished up the TX130 and what a PITA it turned out to be. The spool release was stuck so I had to disassemble the spool while on the reel to get it unstuck. the release spring was practically glued to the shaft. The spool was full of dried up grease, grime, grit, muck and spider egg sacs too.
Runs like a top now. Next up is the Abu. it is easily the smoothest spinner I ever owned.
spray them all down with CRC(blue can). That will loosen everything up so just wipe down and you willl be good to go
You could use a hand line wrapped around an empty plastic bottle, the fish won’t notice the difference, but it’s not very enjoyable. Last thing I want while fishing is for my gear to break down or have issues. If I’m lucky enough to get a bite I don’t want to lose it because my reel locks up or drag fails, whatever.
