Not exactly long, but what is current status of others?
I have a couple, they are legal and see them around at shops. Probably a few for sale by members too. Is this a build question?
no just interesting of leagality
I’m not aware of anything changing regarding ‘others’. Still legal/available in shops.
Seems they have become more accepted over the last few years. They are available in almost every shop.
Follow the guidelines of the law and you should have no issues
Ive been seeing more and more people shooting them at the range recently. I mean it’s honestly the best way to have an AR
I don’t necessarily agree it is the best way to have an AR but I do enjoy the option. Cool factor? Sure, but there are always trade-offs and depends on the purpose. Here’s a velocity chart to consider from 5.56 Barrel Length Ballistics - Sonoran Desert Institute :
I think they should have labeled the last column ‘Max Effective Range’. Can you engage further targets? Absolutely… it just won’t be as effective.
I do enjoy my ‘others’ but since I’m more of a slow fire/group shooter I tend to bring out the 16"+ guns more often. When bringing a buddy out who is not concerned with tight groups and just wants a blast session the ‘others’ are certainly a bunch of fun ![]()
You can still build a 16 inch other. Having adjustable “stock", and able to change muzzle device are nice to have with “other” build with vfg as a handstop
Others are specialized tools. The M4 is a do-all, but SBRs are meant for wet work and getting out of town. IMO the only way to use these other SBRs is suppressed, subsonic, and with heavy for caliber bullets like 77gr that will compensate for energy lost to low velocity (1000fps vs 3100 fps) and make up some of it with mass.
They are a neat ninja toy with a legit application, but NJ has ruined any practical usefulness of others.
You could do that being there is no maximum barrel length restrictions. Though with a “stock” it would be considered a rifle so a pistol brace would need to be in place of a stock.
