You are 100% correct! They can’t, that is why when they offer the 10" bbl option the muzzle device (which is an xtra long version) needs to be welded to the barrel
Just as an FYI - it doesn’t matter what position the brace is in. ATF measures in the shortest possible configuration of the firearm. That means the brace comes off and it is measured from the end of the receiver extension (the rule says “no stock” not “has a brace”) to the end of the barrel with the muzzle device removed - unless it is appropriately pinned and welded in place in accordance with ATF standards.
Side note - I am considering filing for an AOW so I can put a LAW folder on an Other. I can’t find any info that prohibits an AOW in NJ.
You can go retro and use one of the copies of an XM177 moderator that’s a hider or comp.
Of it is a .30 cal (.300 blk) you can use a BE Myers hider from a 240B or similar.
Again, IMO the juice isn’t worth the squeeze to try that. Choose a barrel that is a bit longer and get the corresponding increase in performance! The gun has to be 26”, use it to your advantage.
Yes.
For me tho, getting the barrel shorter at the expense of longer extension tube was purposeful. Took that 1 inch off the front and put it in otherwise dead space on the back.
If I recall, some one n NJ successfully got a AOW stamp.
I started the process years ago, but by the time i got my ATF fingerprint cards, all these new rules were proposed so i halted that process. We’re now in limbo, and id hate to see them continue to try and classify others, pistols and potential AOWs as SBR’s.
My PD always tells me they are 2A friendly, was gonna put that to the test.
I still have my 9mm foxtrot lower waiting for a short 8" barrel… maybe one day.
I’m sorry… I don’t understand this reasoning at all…. Can you explain the advantage? You clearly did it on purpose because it benefited you. I just done know how….
If my preferred LOP doesnt change between platforms, both others measure at 26 OAL, but one has a shorter barrel, that technically gets you a shorter “other” when in use at say extension position 3.
I wanted something manuevarable indoors, and so far shoots well enough at 100 yards with a red dot and range ammo.
Its also not the only one in the bunch.
Has anyone put a rifle extension on yet? How short of a barrel could you go?
I still don’t get it. Sorry. I must be dumb. 26” is 26” regardless of what position the stock is in. Taking and inch of the barrel to add to the receiver extension is just making a less ballistically efficient 26” Other.
Why would anyone do this?
You should want the longest barrel you can get and still stay at 26”.
26" is a random number, and doesnt measure the actual weapon as deployed.
If i ran a 12.5 carbine vs an 11.5 A5, the A5 would be shorter when depolyed with the same LOP both measuring 26" per atf
If my objective is a compact platform, that fits the bill will out sacraficing that much ballstics performance.
Its been shot to 100 yards and consistently rings steel. If i ever needed it, that is far more distance than i require.
I have an AR-15 at this pont for just about everything.
My other “other” is a 14.5 with a qcb brace from Maxim
I agree 100%
Just on point, please - 26" is Not a “random number” it is an exact measurement the ATF requires for an other firearm to be of legal length. You mention “deployed” - the brace position counts for nothing in the legal prospective.
As was stated earlier, if you were to use a 10" bbl. you would need to have the buffer tube extended approx 2.5" +/- to get the weapon to 26" so in effect you shorten the front, and elongate the rear - your weapon is no smaller / shorter / ect.
HE asked about the size of my other, and why i chose it.
I didnt say 26" was insignificant. It is a random number we have to legally abide by.
Its also a value that allows you to take length from the barrel, and add it to the dead space your brace is occupying of you want something shorter.
I shaved an extra inch of the actual length of the other as it would be used, while still maintaining the ATFs measuring guide of 26"…
Arbitrary is the word u r looking for.
I haven’t seen this mentioned I wanted to use a PDW brace on my 11.5" Other and with the 11.5" and PDW Brace I was at 25.5" so I bought a 1.5" barrel extension from Hughes Precision and Pinned and Welded it this got me to 26.5". here are a couple of pics and yes I have a Tax Stamp for the AOW

I wasn’t aware you could stamp anything in NJ. I thought all NFA categories were off the table.
Nice guns! Very similar to my AR pistols.
I meant to mention to you, I love the SBPDW braces (have 3), but the stock velcro closure sucks ass.
I highly recomment the ‘Split Fix’. Really makes the brace solid.
