NJ PTC Renewal Process

How does the renewal process for my NJ PTC work? I’ve read/heard you don’t have to do the class/live fire qual again, you can just use your original certificate for the renewal. Is this the case? Has this been your experience if you have renewed you PTC?

And if so, can you use the original certificate for renewals indefinitely?

I found my answer.

How long is my training valid?

The qualification can only be used for a total of two consecutive permits (One application and one renewal application) with no gap in between the two permits. Conceal Carry Permits expire, and can be renewed, every two years.

A new qualification will be required for the applicant’s next concealed carry permit renewal. That qualification will be used for a total of two consecutive permits as well.

Leave it to NJ

It’s all intentional to discourage you from exercising your rights.

You can get two permits out of your qual as long as you renew, and are approved before the expiration date of the renewal. Luckily in my town if you renew early they still date your renewal as the original renewal date so you don’t lose any time. So for me I was approved for renewal 8/8 but my expiration date is 8/12 which is my original expiration date. Luckily my town is a 10 to 14 day turn around so I wait till its almost up

This is a sore point for me. I submitted my renewal application a few months before the expiration date, not knowing how long the town was going to take to process it. The new permit came back within a month, and the new expiration was two years from them, which cost me a couple of months.

They really need to standardize this, like a motor vehicle registration renewal.

NJSP say that once you are in their computerized application system, the renewal will expire in 2 years after your current computer application issued permit expires.

it was too much effort for them to enter the actual expiry date of court issued permit and they couldn’t be arsed to include a field in the application web site for you to enter the expiry date yourself.

This is just another example of how the government getting involved makes things i̶n̶c̶o̶m̶p̶r̶e̶h̶e̶n̶s̶i̶b̶l̶y̶ ̶w̶o̶r̶s̶e̶ better and more efficient.

As you may have also noted on the State Police FAQ, if your original application was paper based, you will apply as a new applicant on the online system. I very recently renewed mine.

A few tips:

  • As is my practice with any important online applications, I first pause/disable any VPN (e.g. Nordvpn) that I have running.

  • Have all your info ready before starting the application so you can complete and submit it in one go. I.e. the contact info for your four references, the make model and serial number of all the handguns you wish to carry, etc.

  • Beforehand, I took the photo of myself against a light background using my cellphone. I then cropped the image to a headshot and down sized it to 600x600 dpi. (This equates to 2”x2” at 300dpi/inch). This image file was uploaded and was successfully used by the system.

  • For anyone needing to answer “Yes” to any of the disqualifying questions (e.g. “Have you ever been treated, …bla bla bla”.), a fill-in field will appear for you to explain but it limits you to, if I recall correctly, 500 characters including blanks. If you need more room I would recommend you just enter “See enclosed letter” and upload a letter on the same screen where you uploaded your CCARE cert.

  • Near the end you will be able to see everything you entered and make corrections if necessary.

  • You will be prompted to pay the state’s $50 fee plus background check fee and credit card processing fee.

  • Once submitted the system will display a confirmation screen (print it) and send you a confirmation email.

  • The system will immediately send an email to each of your four references.

  • The system will send you an email as each reference submits their response.

  • I went to my local PD the morning after I submitted and gave them a USPS MONEY ORDER in the amount of $150.00.

  • You will eventually receive an email indicating that your PTC has been approved.

That email will contain a link to download a PDF file which is your official PTC.

  • Highly recommend you then order credit card sized plastic copies of it from NJLIBERTYCARDS dot COM. I ordered five. One for my wallet, each automobile, and one for my safe.

Hope this helps.
