My 'new' .22 target pistol

My beloved Benelli MP95 bullseye/International standard pistol .22 (top of photo) is on its’ last legs. Benelli stopped importing their target pistols to the US years ago…they won’t even sell parts here now. I’ve won a lot of stuff with this gun, but I’m out of spares for it, and the old extractor has made it quite unreliable.

The choices for replacement are pretty much down to Pardini and Walther now, since Hammerli has exited the market. But I did NOT want to drop $3500 or so on a new Pardini SP or Walther GSP. Making some inquiries at my local club in North Idaho, I was directed to a guy selling a used Walther GSP. Turns out, it wasn’t just any Walther, it was a factory select model given to Darius ‘Doc’ Young at a World Cup match in Germany. Doc competed in over 100 international matches, won 12 national titles in various pistol events, and set 18 national records. Doc Young was a fixture in northwest shooting, a lot of guys in the club remember shooting at matches he attended. I was still living in NJ while Doc was an active shooter, so I only shot against him twice…at the 1988 and 1992 US Olympic Team Tryout Finals. Doc thrashed me soundly both times, on his way to making the Olympic team those years.

But now I’ve got his gun!

It was built in 1987, but I got to shoot it extensively before buying since Doc sold it to a guy here in Coeur d’Alene. It remains a tack driver. It came with two grips, an Aimpoint dot sight, the factory 4.5” barrel and a custom 5.5” heavy barrel Doc had made for it, plus some spare parts, and-interestingly-dozens and dozens of test groups Doc had fired while doing ammo selection. I assume he was using a Ransom rest, as he shot a number of 50 meter groups that were under 0.7” c.t.c. I got the whole package for about what a budget 1911 would have cost. :slightly_smiling_face:
