For decades, Robert Menendez had the ear of presidents and prime ministers. He controlled the flow of military aid as the Democratic leader of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. A son of Cuban refugees, he was a go-to authority on immigration policy.
But on Tuesday, just after 9 a.m., Mr. Menendez became a ward of the same government that he once helped to lead when he entered a federal prison in Pennsylvania to begin an 11-year sentence for political corruption.
He will be known as prisoner No. 67277-050 at Federal Correctional Institution Schuylkill in Minersville, Pa., roughly three hours away from the home he has shared in New Jersey with his wife, Nadine Menendez, who is expected to be sentenced in September for her role in the scheme. Federal agents found bribes ranging from kilo bars of gold, a Mercedes-Benz convertible and more than $480,000 in cash during a search of the couple’s modest split-level home in Englewood Cliffs. …
30yrs between being a congressman and senator for NJ. In those 30yrs he did not do one thing to better the lives of people in NJ. All he did was make himself rich by selling us out. And the people of NJ kept voting for him, over and over again. The only conclusion I can come to is that the people of NJ are just plain stupid.
At the very least after years of shaking people down, he will now know how it feels to be extorted but what I really hope is that his fellow piece of crap convicts give him the same treatment they gave Whitey Bulger
Remember, the only reason he is where he is right now is because he was in the way of tammy murphy trying for that seat. Phil cut loose his stasi on him to disappear him. If it were not for that he would still be stacking precious metals.
I’ll never forget this quote from Menendez, circa 2018 - still irks me:
“People violate our law — we are a state that has decided that we are against concealed carry weapons. We have stronger gun laws. We believe we have made the states safer as that,” Menendez told The Daily Caller. “They violate our laws – then whatever is the law, and they are found guilty of it, they should pay the consequence.”
When pressed about travelers with CCW permits who may be detoured into his state by accident, he replied: “They know what our state’s law is. They should know what our state law is if they want to carry a concealed weapon. I don’t think that they just simply get detoured and they should think in advance when they are traveling.”
He continued, “I find it amazing that Republicans who believe in state rights all of a sudden have a problem observing the state rights of those states that think that stronger gun laws is the way to protect citizens and that’s what I have to say about it.”
He should be in a high security prison, not the country club version he’s in. No doubt he’s uncomfortable where he is, but he should be so much more so.
