Looking at buying a 22 rifle

Thinking about buying an inexpensive 22 rifle for the range. Looking at the Savage 64 FVXP or the Ruger 10-22 carbine. Opinions please.

Ruger 10-22 has much, much more availability of parts/upgrades than the Savage.

No-brainer for me unless the Savage has particular features you need.

Between the two, I’d go for the 10/22, just because it is easily worked on. Though, if this is your first 22 rifle, I’d recommend considering a bolt action. They tend to be more accurate.

Any suggestions for a reasonably priced bolt action 22?

That is sorta subjective, but we’ll start here. A perfectly average bolt action 22 can be had for around $250, maybe a hair more. A decent one starts around $300, and varmint or target rifles start around $450.

I recommend looking at Ruger’s bolt guns, starting with the Rimfire American. All of Ruger’s rifles have cold hammer forged barrels, and if you happen to have a 10/22 (in the future) they use the same mags. Savage’s Mk II line has received excellent marks and is “affordable”. Look at the Mk II FV, it has a heavy match barrel. If you want match accuracy on a budget, have a lookie-lou at the Ruger Precision Rimfire, Under $500, you will not find a more accurate rifle.

If you ever happen to come across a Marlin 25N, jump on it. They are a crazy accurate “sleeper” that can be had for between $200 & $300.

Thank you. Will check them out.

Agreed, With a Nikon scope I can hit golf balls at 100 yards fairly consistently.

I have this for sale elsewhere

Have a Savage B22 Precision rifle in MDT Chassis about 200 rounds through it testing ammo likes S&K Rifle Match best but shoots several very well. Has an EGW 20 MOA scope rail and 2 extra Magazines (total of 3) $500 shipped. Scope and Bipod are not part of the sale. Shipping ain’t cheap and there’s extra value here.
Payment by Postal Money Order I’m not an FFL I will ship to your FFL with a copy of my DL so make sure you FFL will accept from a non FFL. I’m in Bayville

Any .22 range toy is a hoot to shoot, the 10-22 has many many mods you can go with, I only upgraded my trigger and love it as is. My wife has an M&P 15-22 with a red dot and that is a fun range toy, my most fun toy is a Henry lever, have the model with installed peep sight, I shoot that one the most, pretty much every weekend, with a lever you can shoot S/L/LR in it, with.22 short you can load up 18 rounds. 25 yards with the peep and .22 short I can shoot out a 1 inch red circle with 18 rounds. I don’t own any bolt .22s but they are supposed to be very accurate if that is what you are chasing, my needs are for fun and the Henry .22 puts a smile on my face. Also accepts a scope if needed.

Hands down a 10/22. You can get them in any flavor you want, and super reliable with decent ammo. Mags are reliable and available everywhere.

When you get into bolts, there are a few ways to go:

Savage Mark II - dirt cheap, but reliable and the magazines suck. I compete with a $200 gun against $2,000 guns in precision rimfire matches. The gun is not the reason I’m not winning. Almost as accurate when it comes to practical shooting, but its shortfall comes with reloads and some other minor creature comforts.

Then the Ruger Precision Rimfire. Can get them around $450-550 if you shop around. Take the reliable 10/22 magazines, and shoot pretty darn good too.

CZ 457 is the next step up I’d go. But you’re looking at $600+ at this point. Magazines are great, super reliable.

I really like the Ruger 10/22; particularly the takedown version.

Loads of fun shooting.

Is the round capacity of a 22 rifle limited if there isn’t a magazine?

Ruger 10/22 is iconic. It is ideal for a first gun in .22. As has been mentioned, the M&P 15-22 is also a lot of fun, and is the favorite of many new shooters that I take to the range.
