Loaded Mags

Can anyone cite a NJ statue that prohibits transporting loaded magazines separate from firearm? I hear lots of misinformation on this around gun stores and firearm trainers.

I’m clearly in the camp that loaded magazines are legal as I can’t find anything in NJ statues that says otherwise.

Agree with you that there is no actual NJ law that says magazines can’t be transported loaded outside of a firearm.

Many “authorities” will say that they can be considered a firearm part and therefore count as “loaded firearm”.

I’m not aware of anyone who’s been prosecuted for transporting loaded magazines outside of a firearm.

The irony is, in all those magazine ban cases where the courts are ruling that mag limits are ok is because the magazine is NOT part of the firearm and therefore not protected by the 2A. We know it’s BS, but they are all using the same ruling and wording.

There is one State, I’m not sure which one, that treats a loaded magazine as a loaded firearm.

Nappen has said that this is reason enough to fear that you might get jammed up in NJ under this premise.

There is no NJ statute that says this.

So just more fear mongering from Nappen.

I guess not - corrected below.

A friend of mine just got his carry permit, the instructor who gave the qualification class told him that he has to unload his magazines if he leaves his gun in the car. :man_facepalming:

My answer to anything like that is “show me the statute”

Nappen says you can transport loaded mags. So many NJ FFL’s have no idea what they are talking about…

So, when you do have a carry permit, do you have to unload the pistol if you have to leave it in the car?

Yes

I have a video explaining the travel laws. Anyone want it just shoot me an email at officialnjsharpshooters @ gmail . Com

I’ll send it over. It’s pretty clarifying and the short answer is you CAN in fact carry loaded mags separate from your firearm.
