Lets talk DIY home alarms

LOL… I asked “BIG” dog, not a pocket dog.

Come on, fake Reddit videos… is that the best you could come up with?

Eufy cameras that send notifications to my phone and a big dog with a loud bark. Yeah, he’s a Lab and will probably lick the intruder to death. But his bark will scare the crap out of you.

I agree, I just recently installed a bunch of reolink POE cameras around my house, which I can monitor through an app, but also have them recording 24/7 to an NVR. And everything is behind my firefall which requires me to log into my personal VPN for the app to work.

As far as monitoring services, I suspect (call me paranoid) that systems can be monitored by either manufacturer or service provider. Case in point, the Guthree case. The company was able to isolate the archived video even though she didn’t have a subscription. With the conveniences of modern electronics, digital and rf systems, I agree that it is more difficult all the time to keep Big Brother in check. Sometimes, steel and lead give more peace of mind than a bunch of ones and zeros flying through the air doing who knows what.

This is the way. I have a similar system, and I trained my last LAB in Level I Personal Protection. When he was put into defensive mode, you thought he was going to rip your throat out. But if he ever actually made contact with you, he’d lick you to death.. LOL.. But his bark and growl was scary as hell…

An on-site DVR/NVR is the best option. If you don’t hold the video, you don’t own it. Cloud storage is a joke.

She had Google Nest cameras… a company notorious for invasion of privacy issues.

i’m thinkin i’m gonna set up simplisafe. i’ll go without monitoring at first, then probably add it. my newest problem is that i started to set up my lorex cameras…..but can’t get the fkn phone app to connect to it. i can view the single camera i have hooked up from this computer, so i know it’s networked…but the lorex cloud app sucks wet hairy moose balls.

Texted you a SimpliSafe referral.
Good for 50% off 1st order and a free VideoDoorbellPro.

Simpisafe ALERT!!! We just hooked up Starlink today. It seems the Simplisafe base station is not compatible with 5G. Dumb but true.

I think a lot of IOT devices only connect to 2.4G wifi.

You need to split the 2.4G and 5G bands in the Starlink router, and connect Simplisafe to the 2.4G:

SimpliSafe Setup with Starlink: Splitting 2.4GHz and 5GHz Networks

SimpliSafe often struggles connecting when 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands are not separated properly.

SimpliSafe devices typically require connection to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band for stable communication, as 5GHz may cause interference or range issues. To split your Starlink router’s dual-band network, access the router settings via its IP address, then rename the 2.4GHz and 5GHz SSIDs differently. This allows SimpliSafe to connect exclusively to the 2.4GHz band. If needed, adding a second router dedicated to 2.4GHz can improve reliability. Always ensure firmware is updated for compatibility.

Thanks. I’ll try.

@Sniper It worked but without me. Over night it (Starlink) found the base station and course corrected. Spooky but a happy ending.

Awesome that it worked itself out..

Maybe the Russians or the Chinese hackers fixed it for you… LOL…

Da comrade, but of course.

What model do you have.Im just about done with Blink. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

The Cheapest one without lights and solar charging. S220

I’m currently using Amcrest equipment, for my DVR and cameras around my perimeter. Full control of the cameras and video, video is stored in MY house, not in a cloud somewhere. I can view and playback video from my phone, tablet, or computer or local DVR. Will record continuosly, with no short duration clips. Can set up to get notification when any camera detects motion.

And, my system is all hardwired, not wireless, for all the cameras. Don’t have to worry about WiFi dropping out.

Hard wired is the most secure method. Unfortunately I’m to lazy to run CAT all around the house.
