That’s okay, the forsythia don’t know the date either
In my opinion, the forsythia rule of thumb is bad. By the time they begin to bloom, the temps are already ideal for germination. The fact is,the stuff lasts for 6-8 weeks when liquid is put down and 8 to 12 weeks when granular is put down. The reason we don’t put it down very early is because of runoff when the ground is frozen hard.
Now, I’m not saying I know anyone who does this, but technically you could put down liquid herbicide when overnight temps are reliably above freezing, like 40 degrees. There won’t be the runoff problem.
This is not advice to do that, but an explanation for why we don’t put down product when the ground is frozen.
If you get a pre-emergent like Dimension (Dithiopyr) down while crabgrass seedlings are still immature, it will still work. Not as well as if you got it down before germination (efficacy reduced by about 20%) , but it is the best defense against crabgrass.
If it is way late, you can opt for Tenacity or Drive, both use Mesotrione as the active ingredient and work as a pre AND post emergent. But the post is most effective on broadleaf weeds.
Vigaro is a better value. And, do not skip on the lime if your soil is acidic. Weeds THRIVE in acidic soil, and low pH is like smog to plants, it reduces the plant’s ability to take up nutrients.
Pick up a soil pH test meter at HD, Lowes or most garden centers. Should be under $25. Its a lil two prong gizmo you stick into the ground and it gives an instant reading. They are not precision instruments, but they are good ‘nuff for determining about how much lime to put down. You might find your soil is high pH, t isn’t as common but it happens. Especially around conifers.
Global warming has F’d up my tomatoes with the late frosts and unseasonably cold temps . This time last year my tomatoes were twice the height. This is really frustrating because I spent a lot of time and effort last fall and in the spring amending the soil with compost and nutrients.
Here is an experiment I’m doing with celery. Around mid April I stuck this in the ground after lopping off the stalks. it seems to be doing okay but the stalks are not shooting up like I thought they would.
Even the Broccolli seems to be growing.. Our only casualty, some rodent came in and sniped the corn plants right off at ground level. We have one left. Nothing else was touched..
LOL.. I was a Kyle Busch fan, and when he had M&Ms as his sponsor, my daughter gave me that display. I think it was used originally in a store, to hold bags of M&Ms for sale. Wifey turned it into a planter.
