Keeping paperwork

Is it necessary to keep the paperwork from gun purchases you made if you have sold the gun. I’ve been hanging onto paperwork for guns I’ve sold years ago.

I do. Maybe overkill but for the space it takes I’d rather have piece of mind that I legally sold it.

Yep - both digital and paper copies. And I also have a record of every sale / outgoing transfer. I can tell you the FFL and date that did the transfer in case it’s needed.

Not sure of the answer but I have every receipt for firearms I purchased and sold since 1973!!

If hard copies you could scan them and then save them on a flash drive or memory stick. The electronic files u can also convert to PDF files and then save as well.

All good advice here. I have all my original ptps, receipts, etc. for all my purchases. I really should also scan them all since some of the receipts have faded quite a bit. I have never sold anything, but I’m guessing the ffl who does the transfer can provide a copy.

I guess unless they go out of business (Thinking Herman Treptow Sporting Goods, Milltown)

All good advice. I’m keeping!

Back when person to person transfers were still legal Nappen recommended that you keep a copy of every person-to-person transfer form because the state didn’t have a record of those.

In case you ever had a seizure/forfeiture action against you NJ is going to come at you with a listing of all the firearm transfers to you they have a record of and will want either the firearm or documentation of why you no longer have it.

Yes definitely.
