After dealing with a mess from a deceased family member’s estate a couple of years ago I’ve realized I need to get a will together to provide for the people I care about and to minimize the work to settle my shit if/when I croak it.
One issue - there’s no one in my group of family or close friends who wants my pew pew collection.
I really want to avoid putting the hassle on whoever ends up as executor of liquidating firearms and ammo (especially if, [deity] forbid, I’m still in NJ when I pass).
Any ideas? Maybe an org I should consider bequesting firearms and ammo to?
In all seriousness maybe slim things down so less for them to deal with. Another thought is if you have a trusted friend that can handle/be involved with getting the proper value for the items, then leave instruction for the executor to have them be involved with that part. They will be under a time constraint so may have to take what they can get at that time.
I have had some of the same concerns. The nuclear option is to just have the executor sell everything to a LGS and put the proceeds in an escrow with instructions on how it is disbursed. I’ll be dead so the ass raping at the LGS wont bother me. Just get it done.
Selling to a gun shop is a bad idea…. They will knowingly or even unknowingly give you so little for your guns…. Some of them will offer your loved one little for them and turn around and make huge profits others will give you little for them and turn around and quickly move them for less than they are worth …
I told my wife not to sell anything outright…. All goes up for bids so that she gets whatever the market dictates at that time…. She knows to look for a popular auction site or gunshop that deals on Gunbroker and everything goes to the highest bidder…. She knows how to negotiate so she knows to work out a deal on the fees….
Well maybe at some point in the future consider slowly selling of stuff one at a time that way you can enjoy whatever profit is off of it. If you’ve got anything unique maybe consider a museum, but be very careful with that as once you donate it, it becomes their property and can do whatever they want with it (unless you loan it in perpetuity to said museum). As far as other organizations, I heard the NRA is known to take firearms and auction them off for their sub-organizations. I’m in a similar situation as no one in my family shoots and I’m not very social so I’m going to be open to some suggestions myself, but those are my thoughts so far.
