The pilots in the lower plane in the entanglement are astoundingly lucky they were able to eject.

My parents used to take me to that airshow when I was a kid. It was only 90 minutes from home then. Now that I’m back in Idaho, but up in the panhandle, it’s a 10 hour drive. This is a very tall state…
Speculation from the military pilots on the pilot board is that the number 2 aircraft got out of position while forming up for a formation flyby and lost sight of the lead aircraft. Rather than breaking out into known clear air, regaining a visual, and forming up a second time, it looks like the #2 pilot attempted a blind join, based on where he thought the lead plane should be.

it appeared as if #2 was rejoining formation from above. he had #1 in his blindspot. kinda the same way the guy in the king cobra hit the b17 in texas.
