I Painted a Rifle

This is a rifle that I built with my last lower, spare parts, and a few other parts I picked up here and there. I am very particular about the mechanics and stuff when I do a build and buy high(er) end components so I was not eager to slap paint on previous builds. This one though, well, it’ is a mutt.

The original plan was to do a winter camo, but as I experimented with patterns I decided to do something different. This is not a rattle can job. I used (and custom mixed) Rust-Oleum flat white, flat black, flat brown and Behr flat forest green.

The base coat and the large elements (splotches) were sprayed using a professional spray gun and air brush. The detail elements (what I call fractals) were applied using various items like sponges, shaped styrofoam, a shower scrubby thing and a kitchen sink scrubby thing. All items I bought at the dollar store.

There are no plans for LARPing, I did the camo just to see if I could do a decent job of it. I learned two things. 1) Doing a really good high quality camo pattern is not easy. Creating a self similar fractal pattern was a challenge. 2) You do not need a really really good camo job for concealment. An average job will do just fine and nobody will care or notice.

And, a couple few more.

Congratulations on applying theater-appropriate camo for your upcoming assignment to the arctic front:

The pictures came out a bit lighter than what it actually looks like. The color scheme is closer to MARPAT. Next Stafford shoot, I’ll be bringing it.

Looks good :+1:t2:
