So I got my first drone up in the air and managed not to wreck it. It’s a Holy Stone 360s and it is stupid easy to fly.
The first flight I did in my back yard, which probably wasn’t very smart as the area is only 50x75 and tall trees surrounding. Just wanted to see the takeoff and landing and how well it hovers. Get used to the controls.
Second flight took it to a park with wide open spaces. That was more fun and the beginner mode distance limiter worked perfectly. Took it up to about 100’ and out to the preset beginner mode distance of about 100 yds.
As an old RC and FPS gamer, getting used to the controls was not that big a deal. However I keep forgetting I can fly it in first person. That’ll take some getting used to.
Compared to how difficult flying an RC helicopter used to be, this little drone is really amazing. Takeoff and landing are no longer nail biters.
i’ve always had trouble with r/c helos. started off with smaller ones, then got a raptor 50. loved it…but even with a good gyro it was hard to fly. fixed wing on the other hand…we used to do formation flying, we built an aircraft carrier deck complete with arrestor cable and all…had air races over the farmers field. i had everything from my old superstar 40 up to a 96" p38.
Does your Holystone have a FPV camera? I’m looking for a low-cost way to get into this activity myself. The camera would be nice to have. I see used Mavics at attractive prices, but I’m a little concerned about allegations that the Mavics may leak flight information and photos to “interested observers”. That is likely overblown paranoia on the part of those making the posts I have seen elsewhere, but I don’t have access to the resources that would let me try to figure out whether or not such a thing was possible, and I do like to keep as ironclad control of my PII as is possible.
yes but the camera is on a single gimbal so all u get is up and down rotation and stabilization. Unless it is windy it shouldnt be an issue as the image stabilization is pretty good.
The 360s records to onboard SD but i guess the video signal could be intercepted.
It can also be flown blind, meaning u can fly it without a smartphone hooked up (like flying an 80s RC airplane) but I’ll leave that to the advanced operators.
