How long do i have to use my pistol permit?

I was approved on july 4th for a pistol permit. It seems like things are different from when i used to live here and you needed to soend the permit within 30 days.

Can anyone explain what this means in real terms?

" Electronic Permits:
Your electronic permits are now available for use. You will NOT see your permit(s) until a HANDGUN TRANSFER has been EXECUTED.
Number of Active Permits Available for use: 1

Expiration Date: 10/01/2025 - Please note that permit(s) are automatically renewed for additional 90-days unless your Police Department de-activates your E-Permit."

Thanks all!

You have one permit available to use, if you don’t use it by 10-1 it will be extended for another 90 days, if you don’t use it by then, you loose it. Save your email, you will need to show that you have one permit to execute when you purchase a pistol.

Thanks a ton! I know it’s not perfect but judging by the amount of time it took to get this permit approved and the instant extension of 90 days has me believing that NJ has made some big strides since I last lived here nearly a decade ago.

Thanks for the calcification.

You don’t need the email to execute the permit. Your FFL will be able to see that you have one when they go to process your NJ NICS in the FARS system. You can’t see it, but they can.

You will also get an email when it is renewed at the 90 day mark if you don’t use it sooner than that and also that you no longer have a permit if you don’t use it within that extra 90 days.

Every permit I have executed, I have been asked to see the confirmation email I was sent. Your mileage may vary.

was that at one place or multiple places?

Whatever FFL(s) you are using is/are requesting that email for some reason. The only thing needed to run a NICS is your FPID and your DL.

They may have been asking for that email to ensure you have a permit in the system, but looking at that email wouldn’t tell anyone if the permit(s) have been used already. The state added a feature within the last year to FARS that allows a dealer to look up how many valid permits someone has available. Before this there was no way to know until after a NICS check was approved.

Multiple, have always been asked to see the expiration date.

You must be more organized than most people. Many people can’t find those emails or have already deleted them. The state adding a search feature to FARS has been very helpful.

I appreciate the compliment but the fact that I only found it two days ago means i almost overlooked it.

Im still used the old system taking 60+ days (even though it was supposed to be less than 30)

One the State has sent you a notification that a permit has been approved, you have 180 days (90 days + another 90 on auto renewal) to use that permit.
The permit is sitting in the cloud, waiting for the local FFL to actually create it (on the day you p/u the handgun)
