Help me build a chassis gun on a Ruger American 308 platform

and the mitoyo, which I’ve used for 20 years, is going straight into the trash

Now, back to the Chassis gun

is swapping a barrel strictly a job for a gunsmith or can a shade tree smith handle it ?
Specialized tools ?

It isn’t rocket science, but it is a precise science. I have an experienced smith mount my barrels. U can just bring in the barreled action and new barrel and have the smith do the swap. They will be able to verify headspace and all that jazz.

You should not have to do any inletting or major fitting. The rebarreled action should just drop into the new chassis.

The way I see it, I use an expert where an expert can give the best ROI. I can mount my own barrels but I don’t see the practicality of doing it myself when building a precision rifle. If it just a range mutt like an M4gery, then precision is not all that important, but if u r gonna spend 1500 on precision parts, why not another $150 or so to have an actual expert do the most important part of the build.

btw, a competition chassis will run u about 400 to 1200 bux. If u just want a better form factor, have a look at the Archangel stocks. They are under $200 and are adjustable. However, if money is no object, I kinda like the Oryx chassis.

Seems they don’t do a Ruger American .308, just the 10-22 and Mini 14

This ??

That’s the one. I like it for its linear form, straight back recoil. It also looks kewl.

Cool, I was already eyeballing that one.
Now, the other question - will that take both the standard barrel on the gun now and an aftermarket bull barrel if I want to replace the current on at a later date? How much free floating room do these things have ?
I’d like to shoot the current barrel for a bit, see how it works out, before shelling out the cash to replace it.
I have a shotgun project and a custom flintlock on the bench right now so if I can hold back on shelling out more $$ until after the holiday, it would be nice.

Should be plenty of room for the stock Ruger bbl.

EDIT: On the MDT site it sez will take a barrel up to 1.25" Bull is typically 1"

Excellent, that’s way more than enough
As you can see, about this stuff I know …

Meh, I might know a little more than most because I researched this myself for a large ring Mauser receiver. Basically what I learned is you can build any gun u want with enough money.

Hell, if u wanted to commission your own wild cat, there are machine shops that will make custom chamber reamers for u and use barrel blanks. The sky is the limit.

Most reloaders are happy to load to factory specs and call it a day. I completely nerded out (to the extent my attention span permitted) on internal ballistics and harmonics.

By no stretch am I an expert on this and in fact I know we have a few competitive shooters here and was HOPING they would chime in… ahem… anyway. Glad I could be of some help.

A lot of help, thank you.
Be prepared for more requests as I dive down this rabbit hole

Now, back to my flintlock, I have hours upon hours of sanding and polishing in front of me
