Help me build a .308 Win chassis target rifle

I have $1300 to work with, not including optics

Leaning towards the Savage and Howa Actions

Minimum 24” bull barrel threaded for muzzle brake

Butt has to be adjustable for comb and vertical shoulder

If you are trying to do this on a budget, I suggest looking at the Ruger Precision Rifle as a starter platform. If you build a rifle from scratch, you are looking at between 800 and 1200 for just the chassis.

Looking seriously at this…

They dropped the price to $1240. I bought it last night, at that price couldn’t say no, now I wait.

I did some research and it has really good specks for an entry priced gun
I’m losing the scope and putting my Sig Sauer Tango 6-24-50 on it
At some point I’ll upgrade the bipod, or lose it altogether

I went with a Tika 3x and an Oryx chassis.

Very very sweet !!
What did it cost you ?

Rifle and chassis around $1600

Scope cost more than the rifle and chassis. Will be upgrading the trigger when triggertech comes out with a replacement trigger.

There is a sort of rule-of-thumb that a rifle optic should cost as much or more than the rifle. $400 rifle = $400 - $500 scope, $1,500 rifle = $1500+ scope. The rationale being, a less expensive scope is fine for a rifle that does not shoot accurately enough for 1000 yard shots. Conversely, a $2,000 scope will not make a $400 rifle any more accurate.

I’m looking at building this type of rifle also. I’m new to long range shooting and reading up on the sport. I pretty much have decided on the, Ruger american gen2 predator in 308. 308 is considered a short action? Important to know when selecting a different chassis.

That’s exactly what i was going to do until I stepped into that Howa

I looked at that also.:laughing:Really can’t go wrong with the Howa 1500 either.

FYI, the link I posted has changed, this is the greyscale paint, much better than the colored one - but the barrel is different, not carbon wrapped (according to the guy at Howa)

I recently had a chance to try out a Seekins HIT Pro bolt action in 6.5 Creedmoor and really liked it. They seem to be hard to find at the moment but would be a great “just add scope and bipod” option.

Extremely nice rifle.

Definitely on the higher end of the scale but not by much if you end up going through trial and error with other chassis like MDT, KRG, etc. If you can avoid the “tinkering” impulse and invest in a scope and bipod (or tripod) that fits your needs, it would probably save some money in the long run. That was my biggest issue until I settled into a bolt action system - the idea that I needed to keep “improving” my setup. It took years and a lot of money to realize just how much money I spent chasing “better”.

Words of wisdom.:+1: Tinkering can get very expensive over the long run on any platform but, thats half the fun.:laughing:My setup will probably be around 2,000 when completed. It probably won’t be as accurate as a higher end rifle and that’s fine with me. I don’t see myself getting into serious competition. Side note, add another G if suppression becomes a reality
