Cowboy Revolvers

Been getting the itch, for some reason a .45lc has been on my mind, Taylor’s looks like a solid first cowboy revolver, thinking an army grip over a navy grip, prefer extra real estate, have a Ruger revolver in .357 and enjoy it, thinking it’s time to expand my revolvers. Is the Taylor tuning worth the extra $$$, I have no plans beyond a fun range toy for the revolver, will probably pair it with a lever rifle down the road.

When I got the single action itch years ago I initially went with a 45 lc. Ammo was really expensive and I ended up selling it and getting into an Uberti Cattleman in 357. Great revolver and does hurt the wallet as much.

My Ruger is .357, I have been mulling sticking with it, ammo in the safe already, just can’t get away from the thought of a 1873 and 45 LC though.

Is there a big difference between a navy/army grip, I will have to take a trip to shooters, looks like they have both in stock to check them out.

I felt that same itch several years ago … bought a second-hand (in like-new condition) Ruger Blackhawk Convertible - 5.5 inch barrel with cylinders for 45 Colt and 45 ACP - for a very nice price. Both cylinders shoot excellently; to more-or-less the same point of aim. The advantage is .45 ACP is significantly less expensive to shoot than 45 Colt.

I concur that .38 and .357 would be even less expensive to shoot; which is why I have my eye out for another Blackhawk Convertible - in .357 / 9mm.

(EDIT - This whole single action thing started because I bought a Ruger Wrangler .22 - I liked the convertible so much, I found a single-6 Convertible in .22/.22mag. All are fine shooters)

Finally pulled the trigger on a Taylor’s gunfighter .45lc with an army size grip, Taylor tuned, surprised at its accuracy, needed to get accustomed to the sights, took a few rounds, but isn’t that the fun of a new toy. First .45lc pistol for me, woohaa she is a kicker, absolutely love it.

Here she is after her first cleaning.

The finish on that looks amazing. Did you order that direct from Taylors?

Ordered through the range I go to. Fit and finish is superb, the case hardened frame really stands out, even the hammer has some really nice coloring to it.

I see myself slipping into another rabbit hole! Really enjoying SAA. Getting use to the sights, the weight and the trigger, targets getting peppered with nice groups.

I was given a couple of cases of 30 cal ammo. The guy had gotten rid of the carbine that went with it, thought it was illegal here in NJ. Anyway, all this free ammo, I needed a gun to use it with!

So I found there were two guns, one a semi auto and semi rare gun from AMT I believe. Clint Eastwood used it in one of his movies. Too expensive for me.

But Ruger made a cowboy action gun that could use it, so off I go and buy a brand new one! Actually the wife was the “legal” owner, she had some unused permits…….. It went back to Ruger twice to be fixed before I could even use it, but after the 2nd trip it was perfect.

That was a really fun gun. Shot a L O N G flame, similar to a .357 magnum. Guess it was due to the “short” barrel, I think it was 6 or 6.5”, compared to the normal rifle barrel for that ammo. But it had similar recoil to a 9mm. Very pleasant to shoot. Used to turn off a lot of the lane lights at OBRPC when we used it if few were around, always a nice flame show!

But, I could not stand the frame, that is a horrible grip design, in my opinion. Couldn’t stand the way I had to eject one casing at a time and load one at a time into the cylinder. You weren’t doing anything quickly with that gun!

I sold it a few years ago to someone that wanted it more than I did. Hopefully he enjoys it. Just not my style of handgun.
