Apparently there’s an awesome comet that’s been hanging around a few days and will soon be gone. The comet is best viewed about 45 minutes after sunset and should be low on the horizon under Venus.
Going to bust out the binos and spotting scope tonight and see if I have better luck seeing it than I did the aurora
We tried to see it two different nights, but no luck. Here’s a map showing it’s path. I see some people on FB mention they can only see it using their phones or a camera doing a extended exposure. I think our issue was too much other light in the area from lit buildings.
Light pollution is a challenge, especially when the moon is nearly full.
I can’t say I saw it clearly but I may have seen the tail when it was low on the horizon.
My wife saw something far more interesting though. She described it as a satellite (or something) re-entering and burning up in the atmosphere creating a wide v shaped trail. It lasted several seconds and then gone.
If you look west with an open field in the distance the comet is visible. Better visualized right at the end of dusk. I couldn’t see the tail with the naked eye but the comet was exactly where they said it would be and pretty bright.
Going to try to use some binos to hopefully be able to see the tail.
