Usually around this time I start my Merry Christmas to me list, I apply for 3 PTP which carry me through Black Friday sales and Christmas, I don’t include rifles, as I can buy one on a whim, sigh, and have done so. So, what is on your Christmas list this year? Here is mine.
First up is an Sig, had a chance to try this last week, all I can say is WOW, if you are a 1911 guy go out of your way to find one to rent. P226-xfive
Next up is a Colt Python blued, some serious love has hit me with revolvers, this one has been on my list for a few years now, thinking this is the year.
And last, I think I will finally buy a CZ, not sure the model, probably a carry model, this would be my first CZ.
What’s on you short list this holiday season coming up.
Depending on the Christmas bonus I may slip in a Original Henry 1860 in 45lc
1911’s are like Glocks, you will either love them or hate them, if you fall into the first category, I’m sorry to tell you that there will be no 1911’s you don’t like.
Plenty of ranges rent 1911’s, definitely try one first. If you are around the Brick area, I have a few favorites you can try, I fell into the first category.
Shadow 2 Carry is a definite option, checks all my boxes. I keep looking at an Anaconda, I have 44 mag ammo already for my lever gun, I just can’t pull the trigger on a purchase, I see myself shooting 6 rounds a year.
A couple of guys in my club are handling the estate sale for a long-time and highly successful shooter who passed away recently in southern Idaho. The list apparently started with hundreds of guns, most accurized target pistols for various events. By the time we got it, it still had over a hundred.
When the collection is moved up here for sale, I’ve got first dibs to look at two accurized Colt 1911 hardball guns, and two Hammerli 208 bullseye pistols. Depending on condition, I might end up with one of each. With my Idaho concealed carry permit (not needed here, but it lets me carry in nearby Washington) I get to skip the NICS.
He had a couple of very custom, national-championship-winning PPC revolvers, but it’s dang near impossible to find PPC competitions anymore, so they wouldn’t get much use.
That’s a good idea on the timing. I too used to try to always have a purchase permit available, but stopped when they raised the fees. I was about to put in for some earlier this summer, but then I got my electric bill.
I’ve been waiting almost 6 weeks for my set of permits to be approved. I try to always have a pistol permit available as I always seem to come across something for my collection. However the costs are starting to offset the deals Im getting!
I didn’t know that. Kinda far for me to attend now. I should have said it’s a lot more difficult to find PPC matches now. I shot police revolver matches with the North Jersey Police Revolver league for many years, but that is a different course of fire…more similar to bullseye, though the target, distances, and time limits are a little different.
Anyone have any thoughts on the new Sig P211-GTO? Watched a couple videos last night. There are some cons (gets hot, funky slide design, need a punch for stripping) but for the most part people seem to like it.
I have seen the reviews praising it too, but that’s often the case when a big company like Sig releases a new product. All on the same day the gun-tubers publish fantastic reviews.
Personally, I would not get it, at least not yet. Sig use a lot of MIM parts in their other guns and I wouldn’t be surprised if the P211 has a bunch too.
If you’re in the market for a 2011 style pistol, I would look at Bul Armory SASII in that price range.
If you want to go a bit less expensive, the Springfield Armory Prodigy is a decent gun if you install an EGW ignition kit.
ETA: I just came across this on my youtube suggestions. The guy has some fair criticisms , I think.
Now, what to get? I’ve been toying around with the idea of a Glock, just because. I never really looked into one in the past because the first time I went to a range with friends, some 25-30 years ago, I remembered that I didn’t care for the Glock compared to the other guns I tried. Don’t ask me what model, I couldn’t tell you.
And then I see this. I get Glock wanting to separate themselves from illegal switches being used on their firearms. But I can’t get past them saying they want new laws, particularly when the switches are already illegal.
Glocks are fine, but are only really notably good in 1 respect - they work nearly all the damn time. The tolerances are so loose that almost nothing stops them going bang and they are acceptably accurate for most applications. However, the ergonomics are less than ideal for most people. The triggers suck. The sights shipped from the factory are worse than garbage…the list goes on.
What do you want to do with your new gun? If it is your last ditch, EOTWAWKI gun, a Glock will serve you well.
There are lots of other guns that are going to meet other criteria better for other purposes.
For example, you could use a Glock 35 for USPSA Limited division, but you will find it easier to compete with a 2011 in .40S&W.
