Chokes

Don’t have much experience with chokes for clay shooting, I use the choke that came with the shotgun (modified), ordered a Briley helix modified to try out had good reviews, not sure if the helix is a gimmic or an actual plus. Many reviews state ported is a waste. Would like some opinions on favorite chokes and type, I only shoot clay so hunting with the shotgun isn’t in my future.

Chokes kinda depend on the type of clay sport you are doing. skeet is a wide choke, practically the same as Cyl. For ATA trap I use improved modified bottom barrel and full up top for a longer follow up shot. I think for the casual stuff we do at the WMAs , modified should be fine, heck, I’ve busted clays with my shockwave. and 870 w/18" bbl and cylinder choke.

Now, if you are extra good at pointing, you can go with full and extra full and turn the targets to smoke.

I’m good with what choke to use, was looking for opinions on brands and quality of a uniform spread. The Briley Helix boasts a more uniform spread with a limited center hot spot, says the helix pattern pushes the shot out to the edges eliminating the hot spot.

My bad. I went with Briley because most everyone else did, most of trap guns saw at the club were fitted with extended tubes. Briley also had great reviews and seemed like a good value. I have a set of extended tubes: mod, improved mod, full and extra full. I have not patterned the full or extra full but the mod and improved mod pattern nicely.

I shoot trap and sporting clays. Mainly shoot my berettas. I use Briley Optima HP. For the pros they say titanium is better because of the weight, I shot a few of them and didn’t notice a difference, guess I’m not a pro . I would use standard chokes and use the money for more ammo.

Just make sure you clean and grease them, really expensive when they get stuck

This is one of my favorite guntubers. He just did a spot on Briley….check it out

I shoot Carlsons extended LM steel in both barrels. I’m just getting back into trap so I’ll stick with the LM’s till I get more consistent.

I bought a Carlson’s trap pack for shooting singles trap and have been pretty happy with them. The pack comes with a 16 yard, 21 yard, and 27 yard choke and they’ve worked really well at each yard line. For doubles, I put the 16 yard choke in the bottom barrel for the first clay and the 21 yard choke in top barrel for the second and that’s been a great combo.

So far I’m just shooting single trap, hoping the Briley with uniform spread will help with consistency, nothing replaces practice though.

A Modified choke will be fine for 16 and 21 yard singles. If you start shooting skeet, you’ll want to swap it out for something more open like a SK or IC choke

Little by little I will acquire a full set for clay shooting. Thanks for the info.

The lesson that it took me a long time to learn (and a lot of money spent) was that you really don’t need a lot of chokes to play most clay shooting games. An IC, SK, LM, M, IM, and a F will cover just about everything between the games. In addition to that Carlson’s Trap Pack, my current go-to setup was a Briley’s Sporting Clays package that has SK, IC LM, M, and IM included - that one kit covers me for everything from trap, trap doubles, skeet, 5-stand, and sporting clays for my over/under. The Carlson 16 yard and 21 yard chokes live in the gun and I’ll toss the Briley kit into my bag if I’m doing anything else so I can swap in what I need
