I think it’s time to consider CCW insurance, and wonder who else has it, and with what company. It’s been a while, but if I remember correctly, some policies are “insurance”, and some just offer legal assistance, after the fact. Also, I think Murphy might have outlawed some companies from offering coverage, but my memory might be foggy on that.
So, what is everyone doing about this, and who did you go with? Bonus points if it covers other states, as I travel quite a bit in my RV around the country.
No insurance carrier ever actually offered a policy that would have met Murphy’s mandate (which never actually went into legal effect), to my knowledge.
This is a guilt topic for me, as I recognize the importance of it, have given it some serious thought, but have not yet pulled the trigger. I believe most groups won’t issue coverage in NJ.
From a few different articles I read, when searching for CCW “insurance”, it apparently was signed into law by Murphy:
…“If you are a CCW holder in NJ you will be required to have at a minimum of $300,000.00 in concealed carry insurance in New Jersey to be able to conceal carry your firearms. This legislation was signed into law by Gov. Murphy on 12/22/2022 and goes into effect in June of 2023.”…
Murphy signed it into law in Dec '22 as part of the Bruen-rebellion anti-carry law.
The law stated the liability insurance requirement didn’t take effect until Jul '23.
Portions of that law, including the liability insurance requirement, were enjoined by Judge Bumb in May '23.
So … never went into legal effect.
(My emphasis added)
U.S. District Judge Renée Marie Bumb issued preliminary injunctions that lift the state’s ban on firearms at zoos, film sets, public gatherings, medical offices, and airports’ pickup/dropoff areas. The new order also prohibits the state from requiring gun owners to get liability insurance, a provision that was set to take effect July 1. Bumb also blocked a provision that would have required in-person interviews of character references for gun applicants.
Liability insurance was mandated, but also enjoined by Judge Bumb as has been said.
Legal insurance was banned by Murphy as “murder insurance”. The only options now are legal defense funds or pooled retainers.
US Law Shield is the most commonly used one in NJ.
Attorneys on Retainer is getting more attention because apparently USLS excludes certain things, such as being caught carrying in a sensitive location.
