I’m trying to learn to shoot with a pistol mounted RDS and am having serious issues shooting outside in the sun.
Let me preface, I am fine shooting with irons and I am fine with the RDS at an indoor range. But for the life of me I can’t hit shit with the same gun, same RDS, same zero that works indoors, the moment I try to shoot outside in the sun. I DON’T have this problem with irons in the sun.
And shooting in the same environment with my AR red dot, not an issue, just the pistol.
I originally thought there was something wrong with my Vortex Viper, so I replaced it with the 509T, same issue.
I know is me, not my equipment, so what the hell is going on?
Also, I do have astigmatism, not sure if that plays a role.
Many open emitter RDS sights suffer from the sun reflecting onto the window, creating a false dot if the sun is directly in front or behind you.
If you don’t have your real dot turned up bright enough, you might not even notice that it is a second dot.
For directly in front, occluding the front of the window with black tape will stop the sunlight entering and the problem will go away. You will still be able to see the real dot from behind.
How is it giving you problems. (i.e. where are the bullets hitting vs point of aim)
One thing with red dots is that despite advertisements, they DO have parallax. It just works opposite of how scopes work. The closer the target is to your optic, the more parallax error there is. So if your astigmatism makes it more of a blob than a dot, and you thus have inconsistent sight presentation to the target, you can be increasing your cone of uncertainty through both your astigmatism and inconsistent head to sight relationship. Not that it would be huge in terms of effect on target, but it is something you can encounter that a long gun would help mitigate.
