anyone know the correct type of insulation to lay down in the attic. kraft faced or foil faced and which side do you put the facing up towards roof or down towards ceiling.

Regarding paper versus foil, I don’t think it matters. Most use paper. But the paper/foil side faces the heated portion of the house, so it would be up against the ceiling sheetrock. The thickness/R-rating will depend on the depth of the ceiling joists. More is always better.
It also depends if you’re putting down any plywood to walk on. Obviously, the insulation can’t stick up higher than the ceiling joists, and you want to avoid compressing it, if possible.
If you’re doing a second layer over an existing layer, you use non-faced batts, and lay them perpendicular to the existing batts.

The way I was taught is the backing always faces the interior of the house. If laying up between rafters, the paper faces you. If laying on the floor between joists, the fiberglass faces up towards the roof (paper side down).
