Are you interested in being a Moderator or Admin

There’s no way I can do this on my own. Please let me know if you are interested in being a moderator and if you were one previously.

We will probably need another admin or 2. Will need to have a little Linux knowledge and be in rotation responsible for testing backups. Any experience with Discourse in particular would be helpful but not necessary. Also involved with platform updates and upgrades. Let me know if interested, include your technical experience.

Thanks!

Hey there - I was a very active member back on old NJGF. I have some *nix (Unix/Linux) knowledge but don’t have any previous experience with Discourse. I have a work from home job and am online constantly during business hours. Please LMK if you still have a need for admins.

Welcome DirtyDigz! I will keep you in mind I didn’t have any experience with Discourse either. Though its well documented/supported, easy enough.

A vote for Zeke is a vote for progress. He’d be the Charlie Sheen of moderators.

Winning! Tiger blood!

I was admin for a phpBB board. Don’t know Discourse except that it’s not cheap!
I grabbed NJgunsforum.com from GoDaddy and was planning on using the free phpBB and Sota said he could host it for us.

I’m still pushing for Maks to at least supply me with a list of user names and emails so I can contact Ann (mrs. Peel) and tons more old members who just disappeared when the forum crashed. I have gone on that forum everyday for the last 14 years and have made many friends there! I miss it!
My work is in IT electronics and service management. I mostly work from home.

Welcome JohnnyB! I’m glad you signed up!!

Discourse is free, open-source forum software. The only related costs are infrastructure (server and storage) and services (email, backups, etc.)

Good luck with the last site owner. I tried reaching out BEFORE I even bought any domain names and still stalled for a couple weeks before proceeding with this.

The old site was about the extent of my social media presence and certainly missed it enough to try and resurrect it.

I too am in IT working from home. Started in electronics repair early 90’s.

I was an electronics tech in the Navy Then I was a copy machine/fax technician.
I’ve been a service manager for about 30 years along with IT tech and manager.
I too missed the board so much that I basically did the same thing you did but you got your’s off the ground first and I thank you for that!

My electronics training was in the Army '91. That school alone was 47.5 weeks (longer if you failed a module) and required a 6 year active commitment.

You are welcome to redirect your domain here. Along with njgunforums.net, I have njgunforums.org, nj2aforums.com and njfirearmforums.com redirecting to this site. I considered getting other domains but not sure it’s necessary.

I can help out, as a moderator not an admin. Been a supermod, aka site wide, and handling the NJ forum and Sports forum over on StripersOnLine for 20 ish years (100,000+ members) so I have an idea how to go about it.
I can do the same here and handle the Muzzleloading forum if you like.

I can’t be a point guy as we’ll be doing some traveling and may not be consistently available. The Muzzleloading forum shouldn’t ever be too busy anyway.

And FYI, you’ll need a private forum just for Admins and Mods to communicate, a way to put people who are being problems into mod que - all their posts need to be approved by a mod or admins before they are visible, and a way to “time out” guys from specific forums or the whole site, without fully banning them.
Everyone deserves a second chance (short of threats of violence). A full ban needs to be earned.

Hey Sudsy,
I have made you a moderator. You may notice some new things. Check them out and let me know if you find any problem/issue/criticism. Thanks!

Some good stuff here ! I like the timed auto lock button and the reply timer could help to cool down an overly contentious conversation.

I agree with Sudsy! You will need a private area for Admins and Mods. Good communication is key! We had such an area in the last group I moderated. We just called it Private Section!

I have given it some thought and figured since I work from home and am in front of my computer day and night, that coupled with the fact that someone has to keep Zeke in line . I’ll volunteer to mod + the discobot gave me my Licensed badge for taking a course on how the forum features work and how to access them.

I’ll volunteer to be the guy that frequently gets thrown into the time out zone.
