Applying for FID questions

Hi, I will be applying soon for my firearms license. Was wondering how much it costs after finger prints and normal fees. Also I live in Hunterdon county I read a few places that sometimes it can take upwards of 60 days just wanted to see if anyone has had first hand experience with this?

Welcome DylanAlm33!

You are reminding me I need to apply for more permits

Wait times vary depending on how far down the queue you are when you submit. Nothing to be concerned about it happens when it happens. Total fees will depend on if also getting handgun permit(s). $50 for the FPID and $25/handgun permit.

Ok thanks. Another question since you seem knowledgeable. Would should I start doing now while waiting for my application to get processed? I figured it be a good idea to start learning about the many laws and regulations.

Well, what experience do you have so far? You should familiarize yourself with the existing gun laws. When you find something conflicting, absurd or confusing please come back and ask questions or vent about your frustrations :+1:

Hit the range and rent a few pistols you think you will be interested in, try before you buy.

Any range recommendations? I’m not old enough to use handguns so I would be renting rifles.

Any of the public ones  Considering your age you should get on a wait list for a club near you.

Ok thanks for suggestion, I was just doing some research on clubs. What firearm caliber should I focus on testing? I was thinking .22 lr for my first just because cheap but also other calibers seem pretty damn fun too.

Just suggesting, @NJGF-Admin , you might want to be cautious with your advice, with a new poster.

Have I advised something inappropriate? Just because the OP is not old enough to own handguns shouldn’t be any barrier. They mentioned they are applying for FPID. We need to be open to new shooters and as long as they are doing everything legit what is the concern?

You have not mentioned your location so tough to recommend any place specific. You are on the right track to start with .22lr first (or something that can be converted to .22lr.)

I’m located in Hunterdon county. Doing lots of research probably leaning to ruger 10/22 seems reliable and very customizable.

That’s a popular first 22 but I recommend a bolt action. A bolt action will force you to slow down and focus on shots and prevents mag dump fever. They are generally more accurate than semi-autos too.

I get the sense that you don’t know any firearms owners, surely you must have one friend or friend of the family who shoots. Find them and ask a lot of annoying questions, go to the range with them. When it comes to new shooters, there are no stupid questions. If you happen to have a WMA (Wildlife Management Area) with a rifle range near you, think about getting a hunting license. You can practice at WMA ranges on the cheap. The hunter ed class will give you a good foundation for safety.

I just looked and it says atleast one person must have a valid nj hunting license. I have an archery hunting license, it doesn’t necessarily specify firearm hunting one. You think that’s accepted?

Welcome!

Pretty sure you can only shoot bow at the WMA ranges with a bow license. Bow and firearm are two separate qualifications. Do you have any experience in shooting rifles?

I figured, anyways been meaning to get my firearm hunting license. As for experience I have gone shooting a couple times but not a lot of range time under my belt.

I would concentrate on getting your FID card application filled out and submitted correctly. Its a process. Like others have said, take the hunter firearm Ed class and read up on NJ gun law.The NJ F&G provides everything you need for the firearm ed live fire portion. You just need eye and ear protection.
