Ok, so in preparation for 8/7, I started shopping around for upgrades to my rifles, aside from getting new stocks, I am also getting new gas blocks for 3 of my rifles. Getting rid of all 2 piece gas blocks.
That being said, I will try to remove my current muzzle brakes without damaging them, they are all pinned.
If I do end up damaging them, what would be a good muzzle device to replace them? Keep in mind that these 3 rifles will no longer require pinning and ANY muzzle device will be legal.
my plan is to put the barrels in my vice and use either my drill press with a cobalt bit, or using my angle grinder with a diamond metal cutting disc getting as close to the base of the threads as I safely can then just twist off the old brake.
When I built the rifles originally I was planning on future upgrades to the handguard, which I did for 1 of them. To be able to do that I had to put on gas blocks that could be removed with a pinned MB in to be able to change out the barrel nut. So for the AR308 I went with a JP 2 piece adjustable gas block, which I have had nothing but problems with, and for the 2 AR15s I opted for the YHM hinged gas block, which are not compatible with low-pro hand guards.
I will be replacing all 3 with BCM lo-pro gas blocks.
What’s your intended purpose? Recoil Reduction? Noise reduction/flash redirection?
I added a Midwest Industries Blast Can on my 12.5" Other and it’s a great help in pushing muzzle blast away from me. Noveske KX3 / KX5 are great options too for that, but MI’s is a lot cheaper.
KAK makes Flash Cans too that are inexpensive. Both KAK/MI are sub-$40 while the Noveske is $135.
There are models available for both 5.56 and .30 caliber.
Not really worried about recoil, reducing noise is a consideration. I currently have VG6 Gamma on the budget AR and the AR10, and a Lantac Dragon on the SPR. I just want to know, if I do damage them, if there are better options out there.
On any given point there is something better. All muzzle devices are a compromise of preference vs ability. What are you prioritizing? Recoil reduction, weight, noise?
Unless you have a horrendously loud muzzle brake on your guns, whatever is on there will probably perform adequately. I’ll be leaving my Midwest Industries and Surefire muzzle brakes. And on new buys/builds I’ll probably stick with A2 flash hiders, at least until suppressors are made available in NJ.
Hardly anyone realizes the current A2 birdcage is also a comp. Brakes manage recoil, so f that is not a problem for you (hint, it shouldnt be) then the A2 has what ya need for 223/556. reduced flash, reduced muzzle rise, and solid bottom to prevent dust kickup.
The A1 “Birdcage” Closed Flash Suppressor (M16A1): Adopted around 1967 to fix the snagging issue, this closed-ended cylinder featured five radial gas ports (with the bottom solid to prevent kicking up dust when firing prone). This became the defining muzzle device of the M16A1 era.
The A2 Compensator / Birdcage (M16A2 to M16A4): Introduced with the M16A2 and carried forward to the M16A3 and M16A4. While it looks very similar to the A1 birdcage, it has a distinct functional change: the bottom port was completely closed off, and the overall length was slightly increased. This acts as an active compensator to drive muzzle gases upward, suppressing muzzle climb during rapid or burst fire, while also minimizing dust signature when firing from the prone position
