Personal favorite - CCI Mini-Mags. Second choice - CCI standards. Yes; CCIs cost a little bit more. There’s a reason. Third - Federal Automatch. They were pushing boxes of these for relatively cheap a couple of years ago, and I bought a bunch. They shoot well in my .22s.
Well, that’s taking it to the next level …
For general plinking? As much as people hate em, Remington Golden Bullets as well as Federal bulk ammo has generally been fine in most of my non-precision guns.
For more sensitive guns? If it needs high velocity (supersonic), CCI MiniMags are a good choice. Federal Automatch has also worked well in semi-autos. Also consider CCI Standard, Federal Gold Medal ammos, or any of the precision stuff below, particularlyfor guns that like subsonics.
For precision work, basically anything SK, RWS Lapua, or Eley - but be prepared to pay for that good stuff. CCI standard can be a reasonable alternative
Avoid: my experience, do not buy any Winchester rimfire ammo
For general plinking, whatever is on sale.
For precision shooting without breaking the bank, CCI standard velocity.
And Aguila, but I must have a defective cat, because I never thought they smelled like cat piss.
Federal 510 was the best “bulk” ammo i used to use. Was till packed in 50rd boxes in a 500rd brick but was clean, reliable and inexpensive.
For regular plinking, I have been using cheap Golden Bullet without issue.
Federal HV .22lr alwasy good for me. Champion, AE and automatch. I gone through thousands of all of those.
Ive got a bunch of CCI mini mags that ive not even touched.
CCI Mini Mag for any semiauto and the cheapest stuff for a revolver. I still have some Obama shells from CMP.
My experience is that this is very gun dependent. My 10/22 eats anything and everything while the Buckmark hates CCI but does better with Aguila or Remington.
Used my targetsports membership to order a few boxes of all sorts of ammo to test without worrying about shipping costs each time.
I have many brands of .22 ammo, but CCI seems to work best in all of my 22’s.
