Over the river and through the woods. The fall harvest festival called Thanksgiving is upon us. Just thinking back to long ago when I traditionally hunted goose on Thanksgiving day. It was a good way for me and a couple other guys could get out of the way while the feast was being prepared.
Traditions change and now I do a lot of baking over the holidays. I’m actually pretty good at it, and as opposed to the goose, people actually eat my baked treats.
This year, there will be apple pie, my own recipe, an adaptation with a combo of sweet and tart apples and my own spice blend. I also make the crusts from scratch and use good old fashioned lard.
Also making pumpkin cheesecake pastries in a graham cracker toffee shell.
I also seem to get stuck making the candied sweet potatoes. I don’t mind it because it reminds me of being a kid and “helping” my grandmother make them. This year I’m changing it up with a whipped sweet potato casserole with a really tasty pecan crumble on top.
So… How do u do Thanksgiving? Watching football, going to the (grand) kids house, the kids coming to you.
Sounds delicious Scorpio, I’m just piggy-backing on this thread to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Everyone be careful out there weather is supposed to be cold and rainy so take your time getting where you need to go.
Hope to see a bunch of you at the next shot gun shoot.
I’m cooking for 18 people this year. 2 turkeys, one smoked, the other traditional roasted.
I have the roasting turkey in the brine now, and the other bird is on the smoker as we speak.
I’m also making some pan seared duck breasts for appetizers.
My family insists I make my cornbread and sausage dressing too. I made that this morning, so it has time to meld.
Mrs Tex is in charge of mashed potatoes, and gravy, and coleslaw.
Stepmom will be making green beans and a few other traditional items, plus desserts.
Update, smoked bird done, needs to rest. Cornbread dressing just needs oven time.
My son is flying in from Maine, so we’ll have three of us for our first Thanksgiving in Idaho (not counting the 18 I had here while I was a kid). I’d love to be smoking the turkey, but since I’ve got to make the airport run to Spokane mid-day, we’re going to oven roast it.
First ski day of the season on Saturday. Lookout Pass is just over an hour away, it straddles the continental divide (and the Idaho/Montana state line, which is defined by the divide). Lotsa snow there already, we’ve only had a dusting down here at the lake.
